NATASHA AND CAMERON BELL SENTENCED IN SOUTH SHIELDS FOR HORSE NEGLECT
In 2019, Natasha 'Tasha' Bell, born 22 August 1982 and residing at Bonsall Court, South Shields NE34 0HT, along with her son Cameron J Bell, born 9 January 2001 of Bamford Walk, South Shields NE34 0JA, were convicted of neglecting two horses, resulting in one being euthanised. The mother and son admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to the horses, Porky and Chalky, and failing to meet their basic needs. These animals were found tethered to trees on open land in Boldon Colliery in January 2019. It was reported that Porky had collapsed and had to be euthanised because he was unable to recover.
Both ponies were in poor physical condition and were suffering from heavy worm burdens, with evidence suggesting their neglect had spanned at least six months.
RSPCA prosecutor Stewart Haywood explained to the court that the ponies had been kept in unsuitable environments with inadequate diets. An inspector visited the site on January 24, 2019, following a report of a collapsed pony. The inspector identified Porky, who was tethered inappropriately to a slopey area, and attempted to stand him up with the assistance of a veterinarian. Despite efforts, Porky’s condition was so poor that euthanasia was necessary. Police were also involved, and Porky was euthanised.
The second pony, Chalky, was found tethered nearby, also underweight with a high worm burden. It was noted that Chalky’s tether was too tight, causing discomfort. Both ponies showed signs of suffering, including poor body condition, inadequate access to water, and hazardous environments that risked injury.
Mr. Haywood described the ponies’ suffering as significant, citing their poor health and the environment in which they were kept.
Representing both defendants, solicitor Valerie Bell stated that the horses belonged to Cameron and that Natasha played a lesser role in their care. She highlighted that Natasha Bell had long-standing mental health issues and was on medication, with a psychiatric report prepared for the court indicating her mental health deteriorated during the time of the offences. She emphasized that both Natasha and Cameron felt genuine remorse and were distressed about their situation.
Regarding sentencing, Natasha Bell received a 12-month community order including rehabilitation activities, a £60 fine, and costs. Cameron Bell was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for a year, and ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work along with rehabilitation activities and costs. Both were banned from owning horses for ten years.
This case highlights the importance of proper animal care and the consequences of neglect, with court proceedings reflecting the severity of the offences.
