A Dewsbury resident has received a prison sentence after assaulting his 12-week-old puppy, leading to a lifelong ban on owning animals.
The dog, an American bulldog named Bonny, was subjected to a three-week period of violent abuse that resulted in multiple broken bones.
Khan owned Bonny for only about two weeks before beginning the mistreatment.
The 42-year-old from Whitley was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to three animal cruelty charges brought by the RSPCA.
RSPCA inspector Danielle Grimshaw described the puppy’s condition upon rescue as alarming, noting that her injuries were clear to anyone.
She had fractures in her pelvis, spine, ribs, and foot, alongside a swollen head indicative of a skull fracture, which was not visible on X-rays.
Khan kept Bonny for five weeks, during which veterinary assessments revealed her oldest fractures were at least three weeks old.
Bonny was first examined in August, showing signs of nervousness, difficulty walking, and instability on her hind legs.
She subsequently stayed in foster care with cage rest for five weeks.
Inspector Grimshaw stated that the puppy had been repeatedly and violently beaten.
Apart from the custodial sentence and the animal ownership ban, Khan was ordered to pay costs of £400 and a victim surcharge of £115.
The court heard that Khan was undergoing personal difficulties at the time of the abuse.
Khan’s current owner reports that Bonny, now renamed Daphne, has made a good recovery.
She is described as friendly, trusting, and enjoys outdoor play and sleeping on the bed with her dog friend Ty.
She occasionally limps after activity but is doing well overall, thanks to her ongoing treatment.
