ILFORD MAN SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR WIFE’S MURDER
A man received an 18-year prison sentence after being convicted of the murder of his wife in Ilford, located in east London.
Muhammad Ilyas, aged 41 and residing on Kingston Road, committed the murder of Maria Rafael Chavez on May 13, 2021.
Emergency services responded to the scene shortly after but found that the 32-year-old woman had already died.
At first, there appeared to be no obvious physical injuries on Ms Chavez; however, a detailed post-mortem examination revealed she had experienced neck compression consistent with strangulation.
Homicide detectives from the Met's Specialist Crime Command conducted further investigations, including analyzing CCTV footage and interviewing neighbors.
These inquiries established that Ilyas was responsible for his wife’s death, leading to his arrest.
Although he initially denied involvement, subsequent evidence from the post-mortem, a pathology report, and CCTV footage confirmed his guilt.
He was sentenced at the Old Bailey on July 1.
The couple had moved to the UK in 2019, with Maria taking an English language course at a college at the time of her death.
Meanwhile, Ilyas was employed at a market stall in Stratford.
