MUFTAH MOHAMMED'S SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENSES IN DERBY CITY CENTRE
A 32-year-old man named Muftah Mohammed carried out a series of disturbing sexual assaults and indecent exposures during a brief but alarming spree in Derby city centre. The incidents, which took place on the afternoon of May 24, left several young victims traumatized and shocked by the brazen nature of his actions.
According to the court proceedings at Derby Crown Court, Mohammed approached three schoolgirls, each around 16 years old, in different parts of the city centre.
His behavior was characterized by aggressive and inappropriate physical contact; he grabbed their backsides or breasts without consent, causing distress and fear among the victims.
The court heard that his actions were not isolated to physical assault but also included public indecency.
One of the most alarming episodes occurred when Mohammed entered a bank located on East Street.
There, he dropped his trousers in front of staff and customers, exposing himself in a blatant act of indecency.
This act of public exposure was part of a pattern of prowling behavior, as he moved around the busy city centre and cathedral area, targeting groups of pedestrians, including schoolgirls in uniform.
Prosecutor Steve Gosnell detailed the sequence of events, emphasizing the disturbing nature of Mohammed’s conduct.
He recounted that Mohammed first approached a group of schoolgirls, slapped one girl on her bottom, and made an inappropriate remark, saying, “touch my ****.” He then approached another girl, grabbing her left breast before walking away.
Subsequently, he targeted a third group of schoolgirls, stroking his hand across one girl’s breasts and attempting to pull at her shirt.
The culmination of his actions was when he exposed himself to the same group, taunting them with the words, “have a look at this, do you want some?” Members of the group who witnessed the exposure expressed feelings of disgust and discomfort, although none of the girls chose to give formal victim impact statements.
The court was told that the victims were left upset and distressed, with their sense of safety and normalcy significantly affected by the incidents.
Muftah Mohammed, who resides on Chapel Street in Derby, pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault and two counts of indecent exposure.
It was revealed that he has a criminal record with 11 previous court appearances involving 22 offences, none of which were sexual in nature.
During the hearing, he was assisted by an Arabic interpreter, indicating his North African background.
Lesley Pidcock, representing Mohammed, explained that her client had been under the influence of alcohol and drugs on the day of the offenses and suffers from mental health issues.
She expressed remorse on his behalf, stating, “He is sorry, he is remorseful and he does regret his actions.” She also emphasized that his behavior was abnormal for him and that he had not previously engaged in such conduct.
In sentencing, Recorder Mary Prior KC sentenced Mohammed to 15 months in prison.
The judge highlighted the severity of the crimes, noting that no young girl should have to endure such assault in the middle of the day in Derby city centre.
She pointed out the lasting impact on the victims, who were left feeling upset and vulnerable.
Additionally, Mohammed was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next 10 years and to comply with a sexual harm prevention order for the same period.
Given that Mohammed had already served the equivalent of a 14-month sentence while on remand, it is anticipated that he will be released within the next month.
Upon release, he will serve the remainder of his sentence on license in the UK, a consequence of his immigration status, which further underscores the complexity of his case and the potential for continued monitoring and restrictions.
