NEWPORT MAN JAILED FOR CRUEL DOG EAR CROPPING AND ANIMAL ABUSE
A Newport man was sentenced this week after he caused harm to several puppies he had bred.Moheiz Adam, aged 38 and residing on Cromwell Road, Newport, pleaded guilty to four counts of carrying out a prohibited procedure, four charges of causing unnecessary suffering, and one fraud offence related to canine passports.
He was responsible for causing suffering by 'cropping' the ears of numerous puppies, a practice illegal in the UK that inflicts pain, trauma, and potential health issues on the animals.
The investigation revealed that Moheiz bred puppies for sale through Sons of Adam and uploaded images of dogs with cropped ears on social media.
Trading standards officers, working with Gwent Police, raided his residence, seizing seven American bully puppies and an adult French bulldog due to poor environmental conditions.
An additional three dogs—two adult male American bullies and a crop-eared puppy—were also confiscated; Moheiz claimed they had been imported but lacked the necessary legal documentation.
During the search, seven false canine passports were found, which could be used to falsely claim animals were imported with cropped ears.
Photos of a dog called Abel, with one with intact ears and one with mutilated ears, were evidence of the ear cropping occurring in his care.
Moheiz Adam was sentenced to 80 weeks in jail, but the sentence was suspended for two years.
He was ordered to complete 240 hours of unpaid work, undertake a 15-day rehabilitation activity, and was disqualified from keeping animals for 15 years.
Additionally, he must pay £2,000 towards prosecution costs.
The investigation exposed his involvement in the illegal ear cropping trade, which was also highlighted in a BBC Wales investigation in 2021, calling it 'The hidden world of designer dog breeding.' The case underscores illegal animal cruelty practices and the ongoing efforts by authorities to clamp down on this trade.
