MOHAN KANDASAMY FROM CROYDON GETS HIS JAIL SENTENCE REDUCED AFTER MOLESTING 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN CROYDON

In a recent development in a disturbing case originating from Croydon, Mohan Kandasamy, a 52-year-old man residing on Southcote Road in Sanderstead, has seen his prison sentence significantly reduced following an appeal. The case, which drew considerable attention due to the serious nature of the crimes, involved Kandasamy being convicted of multiple sexual offenses against a young girl.

Back in January 2017, Kandasamy was sentenced to nine years in prison at Southwark Crown Court after he pleaded guilty to 12 counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault. The victim, an 11-year-old girl, was subjected to these heinous acts during a period that profoundly affected her life. The court was informed that the assaults were opportunistic and of brief duration, yet their impact was described as both serious and devastating by the presiding judge.

Lord Justice McCombe, delivering the judgment during the Court of Appeal, emphasized the gravity of Kandasamy’s crimes, noting the profound emotional and psychological toll inflicted upon the young girl. He acknowledged the severity of the offenses and their lasting effects, which had left a deep scar on the victim’s life.

However, Kandasamy’s legal representatives argued that his character should be taken into account, describing him as a “working family man” with young children. They highlighted his previous good character and suggested that the original nine-year sentence was excessively harsh. The defense contended that the crimes, while serious, were opportunistic and not indicative of ongoing predatory behavior.

After considering these arguments, Lord Justice McCombe, along with Mr Justice Fraser and Judge Peter Collier QC, concluded that the original sentence was somewhat excessive. They agreed that a reduction was appropriate and ultimately decided to cut Kandasamy’s jail term from nine years to seven years. This decision reflects the court’s attempt to balance the seriousness of the offenses with considerations of the offender’s character and circumstances, while still ensuring justice for the victim.
