MOHAMMED SUBHAN SHADWELL PHONE BOX PERVERT CAUGHT IN EAST LONDON

In December 2012, a disturbing incident unfolded in the heart of east London, specifically in the area of Shadwell, involving Mohammed Subhan, a 28-year-old man whose actions drew significant public and legal attention. The case centered around Subhan exposing himself in a public phone box, an act that shocked witnesses and prompted a police investigation.

According to court reports, Subhan, who was employed as a full-time carer for his disabled brother, attempted to justify his behavior by claiming he was trying to relieve a long-standing medical issue. He explained that he was simply 'milking his private organ' to ease discomfort caused by a medical condition, which he said had been troubling him for years. His explanation was presented during his trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, where he appeared to be unrepentant about his actions.

The incident took place on January 16th of the previous year, around 3 pm, in Commercial Road, Whitechapel, an area within east London. Witnesses reported seeing him with his tracksuit bottoms around his ankles, smiling at passers-by, which caused alarm and concern among those nearby. Subhan, visibly anxious, claimed he was unaware of any public toilets nearby and was caught in a moment of desperation.

During his testimony, he told the jury that he had been out for a jog when he suddenly felt an urgent need to urinate. He admitted that he had a history of bedwetting since he was about 25 years old, which had left him feeling paranoid and anxious whenever he needed to go to the bathroom. He described experiencing nightmares about urinating in his sleep and noted that this condition had severely impacted his confidence and personal relationships.

He further explained that the act of 'milking' his private organ was a routine he often engaged in, sometimes taking from 20 minutes to over an hour. Subhan insisted that he did not think anyone would see him and emphasized that his actions were purely for relief, not for any sexual gratification. He expressed remorse, stating, 'I totally regret this. What was initially an embarrassing private problem has become no longer private and I feel devastated by that. The truth is, I was simply trying to urinate.'

However, the court was told that Subhan did not seek medical help for his condition until three days after his arrest, citing embarrassment as the reason for the delay. Medical tests, including urine and blood analysis, returned normal results, although he was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, which may have contributed to his distress.

Prosecutor Mandy McLean suggested that Subhan deliberately chose the phone box as a location to be seen, implying that his actions were intentional. She pointed out that his trousers were around his legs at the time and accused him of fabricating his story to justify his behavior. McLean argued that his visit to the doctor on January 19 was an attempt to support a false explanation for his conduct in the phone box.

Subhan denied these allegations, asserting, 'I wouldn’t have done it at all if I didn’t feel like I was going to wet myself. It was very poor judgment.' Despite his denial of a single count of exposure, the jury, composed of six men and six women, unanimously found him guilty after just 90 minutes of deliberation during the trial held in August.

Judge Timothy Lamb QC sentenced Subhan to an 18-month community order, which includes 18 months of supervision. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for five years. The court proceedings highlighted the serious nature of the offense and the legal consequences faced by those who commit public indecency, even when motivated by medical issues.
