MOHAMMED AND NAFISA KAROLIA'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN BLACKBURN: TWINS' SHOCKING ABUSE AND DECEPTION REVEALED

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Blackburn, a couple, Mohammed and Nafisa Karolia, have been sentenced to five years in prison for their involvement in a heinous act of child cruelty involving their infant daughter. The case, which came to light in October 2011, revealed a series of shocking details about the abuse inflicted upon the baby, known as Twin M, and the couple’s calculated efforts to conceal the injuries.

According to court proceedings, Mohammed, aged 29, a taxi driver, and Nafisa, aged 22, who was studying child development, deliberately concealed the extent of the injuries sustained by their daughter. They managed to deceive health visitors by providing a series of false explanations for why only one of their twin girls was present during visits. The couple claimed that the injured twin was often with her grandparents or other relatives, a story they maintained to hide the brutal reality.

The injuries inflicted on Twin M were both severe and numerous. Over the course of her brief seven months of life, she suffered broken ribs, fractured limbs, brain damage, and injuries to her head, ears, and nose. These injuries were not isolated incidents but occurred on at least three separate occasions, some of which dated back more than six weeks. Despite the severity of her condition, no medical intervention was sought, and tragically, the baby later died from an unrelated illness.

The court heard that the couple’s deception extended to social workers and health visitors. When a social worker visited the family home in Blackburn, Nafisa and Mohammed continued to lie, claiming that the injured twin was actually her sister, Twin A. The deception was so convincing that even professionals were duped into believing the false narrative. Joe Boyd, the prosecutor, emphasized that the injuries could only have been caused by the parents, as Twin M was under their care for the vast majority of her short life, with only a few hours spent away from them.

The tragic culmination of these events occurred in June of the previous year when Twin M was taken to hospital with breathing difficulties. She was pronounced dead approximately an hour after arriving at the hospital. During the investigation, the couple claimed that the deceased girl was Twin A, attempting to maintain their false story. However, inconsistencies in measurements of the twins’ head sizes, weight, and height were noticed by social workers, raising suspicions.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the worst fears: the baby girl had sustained more than 20 injuries, and her death was attributed to bronchopneumonia. The evidence presented in court painted a grim picture of repeated cruelty and neglect by the parents, with the court’s judge, Mr. Justice Irwin, condemning their actions. He stated that the evidence revealed a pattern of repeated abuse directed at one child, while the surviving twin appeared to have been well cared for and unharmed.

Detective Inspector Pete Broome of Lancashire Police described the case as “truly horrific and tragic,” condemning the couple for their lack of remorse and failure to provide any explanation for their actions. The sentencing marked a somber moment for the community, highlighting the devastating consequences of neglect and cruelty within a family unit in Blackburn.
