MOHAMMED KABIR FROM CAMDEN SENTENCED FOR SEX GROOMING IN PLYMOUTH

In a case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and the serious consequences of such actions, Mohammed Kabir, a 23-year-old chemical engineering student from Camden, was sentenced to a total of two years in prison for his involvement in attempting to engage in sexual activities with a 13-year-old girl in Plymouth.

According to court records, Kabir traveled from London to the Westcountry with the explicit intention of meeting the underage girl for sexual purposes. He pleaded guilty in December to charges including one count of sexually grooming a minor and two counts of engaging in sexual activity while knowing or believing that a child was watching. The case was heard at Plymouth Crown Court, where prosecutor Jason Beale detailed the sequence of events leading to Kabir’s arrest.

Mr. Beale explained that Kabir had initially contacted multiple young women and girls through the popular website 'Worlds Biggest Chat.' Among these was a girl named Amy, who claimed to be only 13 years old. However, it was later revealed that Amy was actually a female police officer conducting an undercover operation. Kabir’s conversations with Amy quickly turned inappropriate, with him asking if she was seeking a partner and whether she had ever engaged in sexual activity with a man.

As their online communication progressed, they moved to a private messaging platform where the tone of their exchanges became increasingly sexual. In July, Kabir explicitly stated his intention to travel to Plymouth to meet Amy. On July 13 and again on July 20, he exposed himself via his webcam and performed indecent acts in front of her.

He planned to visit Plymouth on July 23 but claimed he could not afford the train fare or hotel expenses the day before. Despite this, Amy contacted him again on July 26 and 27, and Kabir made new arrangements, expressing his desire to visit her home and have sex with her there. He even told her, “I’m gonna be your first man,” indicating his intent to engage in sexual activity with the minor.

On July 29, Kabir boarded a train from London. Unbeknownst to him, undercover police officers stationed at Exeter monitored his communications with Amy. The officers observed him texting her repeatedly and arrested him at Plymouth railway station.

During the hearing, Kabir’s defense lawyer, Simon Laws, argued that his client had no prior convictions and described him as a “sexually frustrated young man” who lacked the moral judgment to resist temptation. Despite this, the court found him guilty of serious offenses.

Judge Gilbert sentenced Kabir to 14 months for online grooming and an additional ten months for the online exposure, with the sentences to run concurrently. This resulted in a total prison term of two years, from which 184 days spent on remand were deducted. Furthermore, Kabir was ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years and to comply with a Sexual Offences Prevention Order for the same duration, underscoring the gravity of his actions and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
