MOHAMMED ALIM IN CHADDERTON OLDHAM: COLD-BLOODED SEX ATTACK ON TEENAGE GIRL LEAVES COMMUNITY SHOCKED

In February 2011, a disturbing case of sexual assault unfolded in the town of Chadderton, Oldham, involving Mohammed Alim, a 30-year-old man whose actions have left a lasting scar on the local community. The incident, described by court officials as a 'cold and calculated' attack, took place on the evening of September 18 of the previous year, and the repercussions continue to resonate today.

According to court proceedings at Minshull Street Crown Court, Alim, who was then a failed asylum seeker from Bangladesh and had arrived in the UK at the age of 16, targeted a teenage girl as she was walking along a street in Chadderton. The court heard how he stalked her, following her movements with predatory intent. As she passed through a narrow alleyway, Alim suddenly pulled her into the secluded space, where he proceeded to throttle her in an attempt to silence her. The assault escalated as he raped her twice, leaving her traumatized and vulnerable. During the attack, he also stole her handbag, adding to the severity of his crimes.

Despite the brutality of the assault, the victim’s ordeal was far from over. Just a few days later, she encountered Alim again while she was driving with her father in Oldham. Recognizing him, she immediately alerted her father, who then pulled over the vehicle and approached Alim under the pretense of seeking directions, hoping to lure him into a trap. However, Alim, upon seeing the girl, fled the scene, prompting her father to give chase. The pursuit was joined by two PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers) patrolling the area, who eventually managed to corner Alim after he ran into a stranger’s house.

Alim’s arrest was facilitated by DNA evidence recovered from the scene of the attack, which linked him conclusively to the crime. His background was also scrutinized, revealing that he had previously attempted to claim refuge in the UK, but all such applications had been refused. During the court proceedings, Alim pleaded guilty to one count of rape, acknowledging his guilt in the face of the evidence presented.

Judge Lakin, presiding over the case, delivered a stern sentence, emphasizing the gravity of Alim’s actions. He stated, “You subjected a young girl to every woman’s worst nightmare. This rape was cold and calculated. During the attack, she feared she would die and feels fortunate to be alive. The impact on her has been profound—she is now scared, struggles with sleep, and faces difficulties in her studies. In my judgment, you are a dangerous offender.”

As a result, Mohammed Alim was sentenced to a term of seven years and four months in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to serve a further two years on license, with a deduction of 130 days already spent in custody. The court also mandated that he sign the sex offenders register for life and prohibited him from working with children indefinitely. Two other charges, related to sexual assault and theft, were left on file, meaning they could be pursued at a later date.

Outside the courtroom, members of the victim’s family expressed their dismay at the length of the sentence. They voiced their frustration, stating, “This sentence is not long enough for what he has done—it is horrendous what she has been through. If her father had caught him, he might have killed him. She has had to undergo injections in case she contracted HIV, and he also gave her a sexually transmitted disease. What teenage girl should have to endure that? She has been left terrified and has had to move away from the area so she doesn’t have to walk past where the attack happened.”
