MITCHELL CRAIK FROM PLYMOUTH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX IMAGE OFFENSES
In a case that has shocked the local community of Plymouth, Mitchell Craik, a resident of Hill Path in Ernesettle, was brought before the court following his admission to possessing an extensive collection of indecent images of children.The investigation into Craik’s activities began when he took one of his computers to a repair shop on November 5, 2009.
During the repair process, the technician discovered material that was clearly obscene and inappropriate, prompting immediate reporting to the police authorities on November 9.
Early the next morning, at approximately 4:40 am, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Craik’s residence.
The police arrived at his home and attempted to gain entry, but it took them about 25 minutes to do so.
Upon entry, they observed that Craik’s computer had been recently switched off, which the officers interpreted as a deliberate attempt to conceal or delete incriminating files, indicating that Craik was aware of the investigation and was trying to hide evidence.
During the search, the police uncovered a disturbing collection of materials.
They found seven paperback books containing child pornography and a DVD box set titled 'Sexy Schoolgirl.' The officers also examined Craik’s computers, which contained a staggering total of 8,000 images categorized across various levels of severity.
Specifically, there were 7,547 images at the lowest level, 131 at the next level, 228 at a higher level, 345 at an even more serious level, and 16 images classified as the most severe, level five.
Additionally, there were 36 images depicting extreme adult pornography.
The case was brought before Judge Erik Salomonsen, who emphasized the importance of balancing justice with the need for rehabilitation.
Recognizing the severity of the offense but also considering the public interest, the judge decided on a sentence that would allow Craik to seek help and address his behavior.
As a result, Mitchell Craik, aged 62, was sentenced to 52 weeks in prison, suspended for two years.
The court also imposed two years of supervision by the Probation Service, a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, and ordered Craik to complete the Internet Sex Offender Treatment Programme.
Furthermore, he was required to pay costs amounting to £550.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and the judiciary to combat the distribution and possession of child exploitation material, especially within communities like Plymouth.
