MIRCEA CICALO AND HIS CRIME SPREE IN LUTON
Mircea Cicalo, a 22-year-old man with no fixed residence, has been condemned to serve a lengthy 18-year prison sentence after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offences committed in Luton. The case took a dramatic turn when Cicalo, who initially appeared to be in custody, fled the United Kingdom to escape the consequences of his actions, prompting an extensive international manhunt.
The sequence of events unfolded over a short period in late 2018, with Cicalo targeting two women in the town within less than three weeks.
His first assault occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 13.
A passer-by, concerned by the distress of a woman in her 40s and noticing her with facial injuries in a ditch located on Cromwell Road, contacted emergency services.
The woman was eventually transported to hospital for treatment following a brutal attack by Cicalo, who had initially approached her on New Bedford Road.
Documentation from the investigation detailed how he then raped her and left her seriously injured in the ditch.
The second incident took place on November 2, just weeks after the first.
During the early hours, a woman in her 20s reported to police that she had been raped and assaulted by a man who had engaged her in conversation while she walked through Luton town centre.
Authorities responded swiftly, arresting a suspect within minutes after the woman made a 999 call.
CCTV footage was instrumental in tracking him as he left the scene.
During police interviews, Cicalo denied the assault, claiming that any sexual activity was consensual.
Initially, he was released on bail as investigations continued.
As forensic investigations advanced, a DNA profile associated with the October attack was matched to Cicalo in February 2019.
However, by this stage, the perpetrator had already fled the country, evading extradition and the ongoing investigation.
The police issued a European Arrest Warrant to facilitate his capture across borders.
The search for Cicalo culminated in February 2021 when he was finally extradited back to the United Kingdom from Romania, where he had sought refuge.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Cicalo pleaded guilty to the charges of two rapes committed in Luton.
His escape from justice and subsequent extradition underscored the complexity and international scope of the case.
The judiciary responded by sentencing him to 18 years in prison, reflecting the severity and danger posed by his crimes.
Cicalo’s case highlights the relentless efforts by law enforcement in pursuing and bringing dangerous offenders to justice, even beyond national borders.
