SCARBOROUGH TEACHER MIKE HARDY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH 14-YEAR-OLD PUPIL

In a case that has shocked the community of Scarborough, Mike Hardy, a 48-year-old teacher with over two decades of experience, was sentenced to 16 months in prison after admitting to engaging in a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student. The incident came to light following an investigation that revealed Hardy’s inappropriate conduct during the summer holidays, a period when the student was visiting him at his residence.

Hardy, who was the head of year at a local secondary school, was found to have initiated a relationship with the girl after she began visiting him during the school’s summer break. The relationship reportedly started with innocent interactions but quickly escalated into a more serious and unlawful affair. The court heard that Hardy, a married man, had been involved with the girl for approximately six months, during which they exchanged numerous text messages and met regularly.

The case was heard at Doncaster Crown Court, where Judge Leslie Hull delivered a stern judgment. The judge emphasized that Hardy had ignored warnings from a senior colleague about getting too close to the student, which constituted a gross breach of trust. In his remarks, Judge Hull stated, “This was not an isolated incident driven by passion. It was a pattern of conduct. Beyond the fact that you were her teacher, there was a significant age difference—he was 47, and she was only 14.”

The judge also expressed concern about the emotional damage inflicted upon the girl, noting that she had to deceive her parents to maintain her relationship with Hardy. Hardy had previously admitted to five counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 16 during an earlier hearing.

In addition to the prison sentence, Hardy was ordered to be placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years and was banned from working with children in the future. A restraining order was also issued, prohibiting him from having any contact with the girl for a period of five years. The total sentence, including the period on licence following his release, was set at two years.

The court was informed that the girl had developed a crush on Hardy, who was twice married. Their relationship reportedly began with innocent gestures, such as holding hands during a school trip to Lightwater Valley, and progressed to exchanging text messages during holidays. Hardy, who worked as a theatre lighting operator at Hull City Hall, would often date her, and their social outings led others to mistakenly believe she was his niece.

As the relationship deepened, the girl began acting out in class to be sent to Hardy, who was the head of year. Hardy’s legal representative, Andrew Semple, described his client’s actions as a grave error of judgment that resulted in the loss of his job, his home, and the respect of those around him, including nearly his wife. Semple also pointed out that, despite her vulnerability, the girl was not shy or timid, and therefore, her actions should be viewed in context.

The affair was uncovered when Hardy dropped the girl off at her home one evening, and her parents confronted her. She then admitted to having sex with Hardy, revealing that they had been intimate twice a week. Hardy initially denied the allegations but later confessed that he had taken her virginity on the day before Christmas Eve in 2002, in a flat above a pizza shop where he worked. The court was told that Hardy would often cycle to the pizza takeaway during the summer holidays to see her, further illustrating the extent of their relationship.

Judge Hull concluded the hearing by ordering Hardy to sign the sex offenders’ register for a decade and sentenced him to 16 months in prison, with an extended period of supervision on licence. The case has left many in Scarborough questioning the boundaries of trust and the safeguarding of young students in the community.
