MICHAEL YATES FROM PLYMOUTH AND ST AUSTELL JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND INDECENT IMAGES

In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Plymouth and St Austell, Michael Yates, a 45-year-old primary school teacher, was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of possessing and creating indecent images of young children. The case came to light following a police operation targeting internet child pornography, during which authorities uncovered a cache of illicit material at Yates's residence.

Yates, who was employed as a dance and drama teacher at St Mewan Primary School in St Austell, Cornwall, was discovered to have secretly filmed three young girls, aged eight and nine, undressing for swimming lessons. The footage was captured using a hidden camcorder, and the video was found during a police raid on his home in Plymouth. The raid was part of a broader investigation into online child exploitation, and the authorities were alerted to Yates's activities after US law enforcement agencies provided information linking him to the Landslide child abuse website.

The police investigation revealed that the video footage, taken in 1994, depicted the young girls undressing in a classroom setting alongside boys. The victims, now adults, expressed their shock and disgust upon learning about the secret recordings made without their knowledge or consent. The court heard that the video was part of a larger collection of illicit material stored on Yates's computer CDs, which were cleverly concealed under the bottom drawer of a desk at his Plymouth home. These CDs contained approximately 13,500 images, with a staggering 90 percent of them depicting children in various states of undress.

Further examination of Yates's digital files uncovered 22 indecent images sourced from the internet, which he had created or downloaded. The prosecution, led by Ann Reddrop, emphasized the severity of the material found, highlighting the disturbing nature of the images and the potential harm inflicted on the victims. Yates admitted to possessing the video and the 22 indecent images, but denied any further criminal intent.

In court, Yates was convicted and sentenced to four months in prison. Additionally, he was prohibited from working with children and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next seven years. The court also mandated that he complete a three-year sex offenders' treatment program upon his release. The case has raised serious concerns about safeguarding children and the importance of vigilance among educators and community members to prevent such heinous crimes from occurring in the future.
