MICHAEL WHITTEMORE SENTENCED IN DERBY FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGER
In a significant case that has shaken the community of Derby, Michael Whittemore, a 48-year-old man from Osmaston Park Road, was handed a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of serious sexual offenses committed against a teenage girl in the early 2000s.Whittemore faced a trial at Derby Crown Court where he vehemently denied all allegations brought against him. Despite his denials, the jury found him guilty of two counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault, confirming the severity of his actions during the period in question.
The incidents took place across various locations within Derby, where the victim, who was in her teens at the time, endured repeated sexual assaults. The young woman recounted to authorities how Whittemore subjected her to multiple acts of sexual violence, including rape, over a span of time. She also revealed that Whittemore had instructed her to keep the abuse a secret, adding to the trauma she experienced.
It was only after many years that the woman, now in her 30s, decided to come forward and report the abuse. Her decision was influenced by the emotional toll the memories of Whittemore’s offending had taken on her personal life, including her marriage. Additionally, she was motivated by recent media reports highlighting similar cases of abuse, which encouraged her to seek justice.
Throughout the trial, the victim demonstrated remarkable bravery by giving evidence against Whittemore, finally bringing closure after more than a decade of silence. Whittemore, who resides on Osmaston Park Road in Derby, maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.
Following the conviction, Whittemore was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the six offences. Furthermore, he is required to sign the sex offenders register for life, a condition that will take effect on 22 July. The case underscores the importance of perseverance and courage in seeking justice for victims of sexual abuse, regardless of the passage of time.
