MICHAEL THOMAS FROM BIRKENHEAD AND LESMEGHAGOW SENTENCED FOR ABUSE OF YOUNG BOYS IN SCOTLAND
In a disturbing case that has shocked communities across Scotland and the North West of England, Michael Thomas, a 29-year-old man originally from Oxton, now residing in Lesmeghagow, Lanarkshire, was sentenced to six years in prison for a series of heinous crimes committed against two young boys in Scotland. The offences took place over a span of more than a year, involving acts of severe physical and sexual abuse that have left lasting scars on the victims.Thomas, who was previously employed as a software engineer and had also worked at Marconi, was caught after one of the young victims confided in his grandmother about the abuse. This revelation prompted immediate police action, leading to the seizure of Thomas's computer and a detailed investigation. The police interviews revealed that Thomas had assaulted the boys in different locations, including a flat in Paisley and a house in a town within Lanarkshire.
During the court proceedings, the prosecutor, Vinit Khurana, detailed the extent of Thomas’s misconduct. The boys, aged seven and eight at the time, disclosed that Thomas had subjected them to a series of brutal acts, including pushing one boy’s head into a sink filled with water. The court heard that Thomas had also downloaded explicit images and videos from the internet, which depicted girls as young as eight, highlighting a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.
Thomas admitted to a range of offences, including lewd and libidinous acts towards the eight-year-old between July 7 and November 15, 2005, in Paisley, and towards the seven-year-old on October 28 or 29, 2006, in Lanarkshire. He also pleaded guilty to physically assaulting the boys, such as slapping them, standing on their heads, and restricting their breathing. Specifically, he admitted to pushing one boy’s head into water, slapping the other on the face, and hitting them with a PlayStation wire during incidents related to theft of juice.
Legal representatives for Thomas acknowledged the gravity of his actions, with his defense lawyer, Frank Gallagher, stating that his client fully understood the necessity of a substantial custodial sentence. The judge, Lord Hodge, responded with a firm sentence, sentencing Thomas to six years in prison. Additionally, upon release, Thomas will be subject to a six-year supervision order and will be required to register as a sex offender.
In delivering the sentence, Lord Hodge emphasized the severity of Thomas’s conduct, describing his behavior as wholly unacceptable and noting the potential for long-term harm to the victims. The judge also highlighted that Thomas poses a high risk of reoffending and causing further harm.
The mother of the boys expressed her anguish outside the court, revealing that her children are now undergoing psychological treatment. She described her sons as traumatized by the abuse, with one of them now wetting the bed. She also recounted that Thomas, as he was led away, yelled, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” a gesture she found both heartbreaking and indicative of his awareness of his wrongdoings. The mother voiced her frustration, stating, “This man stole a big part of my kids’ lives. I don’t think six years is enough. He should be spending at least ten years in jail.”
