MICHAEL SWANN'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN WARRINGTON: CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND FILMING REVEALED
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Warrington, Michael Swann, a 55-year-old man with a long history of sexual offenses, was found guilty of possessing and creating a vast collection of indecent images and videos involving children. The investigation was triggered when police raided his home on Lockerbie Close in Warrington on the morning of March 3 last year.
During the search, officers confiscated multiple electronic devices, including five computers, six memory sticks, two hard drives, an SD card, and a mobile phone, all of which contained a horrifying array of illegal material.
Prosecutor Zahra Baqri detailed the extent of the material discovered, revealing that a staggering total of 7,532 indecent images of children were found on Swann’s devices.
Among these, 334 images and 821 videos were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe forms of abuse.
One particularly disturbing clip depicted a girl aged between three and four being raped.
In addition, authorities uncovered 879 photographs and 326 videos categorized as Category B, along with 5,023 images and 74 videos in Category C.
Swann was also found to have recorded 34 images of young girls in states of undress, further illustrating his depraved interests.
The investigation revealed that Swann had been collecting such material since July 2008.
Notably, he amassed 2,950 cartoon depictions of children engaged in sexual acts, highlighting the extent of his obsession.
Although over a million other images were stored on his devices, their legality could not be determined due to the sheer volume, and they were not formally assessed.
During police interviews, Swann admitted to having a sexual interest in children and acknowledged that viewing these images provided him with a sense of relief and release.
He explained to detectives that he found viewing such material to be a way to escape from his problems.
Swann also claimed that the girls depicted in the images and videos were unaware they were being filmed or photographed while in their underwear or naked, a statement that added to the gravity of his offenses.
His victim’s mother, in a statement read out in court, expressed her devastation, stating she had been left “shell shocked” and “broken” after discovering that her children had been preyed upon by Swann.
The court heard that Swann’s disturbing behavior was not isolated; in December of the previous year, after analyzing the contents of his electronic devices, he admitted that he knew his actions were wrong but was too frightened to seek help.
His criminal history includes seven previous convictions for 22 offenses, including a nine-month sentence in 2003 for possessing and making indecent images, and a community order in 2004 for similar offenses, which he later breached, resulting in a five-month imprisonment.
Helen Chenary, representing Swann, acknowledged his troubling issues, stating, “He readily accepts that he has issues with this kind of behaviour.
It is troubling.
This is not a man coming before the courts for the first time in connection with these offences, yet he is still struggling.
He accepts that he was given an opportunity almost 20 years ago now.
He would very much like assistance, but he knows that option is unlikely to be available.
He makes nothing but apologies for his behaviour, but he knows he needs help.” She also highlighted that Swann had made a serious attempt on his own life, indicating the depth of his struggles.
Swann pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including taking indecent images, possession of indecent and prohibited images, and making indecent images.
On Monday, he was sentenced to a five-year prison term.
Judge David Aubrey KC emphasized the severity of his actions, stating, “There is a constant pattern of a sexual preoccupation with accessing indecent images.
In my judgement, you have an insatiable, deviant and depraved interest in young children.
You were downloading, storing, possessing and taking such images for your own sexual gratification.
All of these images you downloaded perpetuate the abuse and exploitation of young children.” The judge further noted the extensive volume of material found on Swann’s devices, including over a million images that had not been categorized, which contributed to the seriousness of his crimes.
As part of his sentence, Swann was also issued a 15-year sexual harm prevention order and will be required to remain on the sex offenders' register for life, underscoring the ongoing risk he poses to the community of Warrington.
