MICHAEL STEPHENSON'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN CARDIFF: LIFE SENTENCE FOR VILE SEXUAL OFFENSES AGAINST SCHOOLGIRLS
In a chilling case that has shocked the community of Cardiff, a man named Michael Stephenson, aged 40, was handed an unprecedented sentence of 18 life terms following his conviction for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed over a span of 15 years.The crimes involved the brutal abuse of young girls, some as young as six, and took place within the confines of his own home on the Ely estate.
Stephenson's method of luring his victims was particularly disturbing.
He exploited his own children as bait, enticing five young girls, aged between six and 14, to visit his residence.
Once there, he subjected them to severe sexual assaults.
Disturbingly, he even involved his young sons in his depraved acts, allegedly encouraging them to 'watch and learn' as he raped the girls, a detail that underscores the depth of his depravity.
During the court proceedings at Cardiff Crown Court, Stephenson admitted to 11 counts of rape and seven other serious sexual offenses, which included 10 counts of indecent assault and one of gross indecency.
The prosecution, led by Ian Pritchard-Witts, described Stephenson as a predator and tormentor, emphasizing that he took advantage of the girls during visits to his home.
The abuse reportedly began when Stephenson's wife was out shopping with friends, and one of the young girls was given a piggyback into his bedroom, marking the start of his long history of abuse.
Testimonies revealed that Stephenson had threatened the victims with violence if they disclosed the assaults.
One girl, who was only six at the time, recounted how Stephenson 'mumbled and grunted' while raping her.
Another victim, aged nine, was trapped in an airing cupboard during a game of hide-and-seek, where Stephenson indecently assaulted her.
The court also heard that Stephenson, who weighed approximately 20 stone, engaged in further disturbing acts, including bouncing on an 11-year-old girl while she lay on his sofa.
The court was informed that Stephenson had a prior conviction from 1987, serving 18 months for attempting unlawful intercourse with an eight-year-old girl.
This history of offending highlights a pattern of predatory behavior spanning many years.
Defending Stephenson, lawyer David Aubrey stated, 'Whatever happens to him in prison he has only himself to blame.' Judge Gibbon, addressing Stephenson directly, condemned his actions, stating, 'These offences were vile and I think you will remain a danger to young children until old age reduces libido.' Following the sentencing, a father of one of Stephenson's victims expressed his outrage, saying, 'He’s got what he deserved...
my daughter and these other poor girls have been put through hell.' The case has left a lasting scar on the community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and justice in protecting vulnerable children from such heinous crimes.
