MICHAEL SMITH FROM BIRKENHEAD AND CLAUGHTON SENTENCED FOR SECRETLY FILMING SCHOOLGIRL

In February 2016, Michael Smith, a former science teacher at St Anselm’s College located in Birkenhead, was handed a prison sentence of 12 months after he pleaded guilty to secretly filming a schoolgirl. The disturbing incident involved Smith covertly recording the victim during her shower, an act that caused significant emotional distress to her. Subsequently, he also recorded her with her boyfriend, further compounding the breach of trust and privacy.

Smith’s actions drew widespread condemnation, especially considering he had no previous criminal record. Nonetheless, the court took a firm stance against his behaviour, emphasizing the seriousness of his misconduct. As part of his sentence, Smith was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of five years, a measure intended to monitor and prevent any future offending.
