MICHAEL POWELL FROM WATCHET FACES JAIL AFTER CHILD ABUSE VIDEO ADMISSIONS IN TAUNTON

In March 2014, a man from Watchet, identified as Michael Powell, faced serious legal proceedings after admitting to the creation and distribution of numerous indecent images involving young children. Powell, aged 27 and residing on Helwell Green in Watchet, was found to have stored at least 46 videos and 11 photographs depicting child abuse at his home. These illicit materials were not only kept for personal viewing but were also shared with others, highlighting a disturbing pattern of exploitation.

Powell appeared before Taunton Crown Court to plead guilty to multiple charges. Specifically, he admitted to six counts of making indecent photographs of a child and twelve counts of distributing such images. The court proceedings revealed that these illegal activities occurred over a period spanning from March 2011 to April 2012, indicating a sustained period of offending.

In addition to these charges, Powell faced an allegation related to possessing an extreme pornographic image involving sexual activity with an animal. He denied this particular charge during the hearing. The court was informed that Powell’s pleas to the charges he admitted were accepted, and the charge he denied is likely to be formally dropped or left on file without further action.

During the brief hearing on Monday, March 17, Powell was seen in the dock dressed in a black suit, white shirt, and a distinctive red and white striped tie. He spoke only to confirm his identity and to enter his pleas to the 19 charges brought against him. His legal representative, Patrick Mason, emphasized that Powell was of “previous good character” and requested that a pre-sentence report be prepared. This report would provide the court with background information about Powell’s personal history, which could influence the sentencing decision.

Judge David Ticehurst addressed Powell directly, making it clear that all sentencing options remained open. He stated, “Let me make clear that all options are open to the judge who sentences you, including an immediate prison sentence. No promises are being held open to you just because I am adjourning it for a pre-sentence report.”

Despite the serious nature of the charges, Powell was granted bail and is scheduled to return to Taunton Crown Court for sentencing on April 15. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child exploitation and the importance of judicial proceedings in addressing such grave offenses.
