READING MAN MICHAEL MITCHELL SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX IMAGES AND ANIMAL PORNOGRAPHY IN READING

In May 2021, a man from Reading, identified as Michael Mitchell, was sentenced to serve a significant prison term after being found guilty of possessing and creating highly disturbing indecent images of children and animals.

The court heard that Mitchell, aged 41 and residing on Havergate Way in Reading, had been involved in this illicit activity for over three years, beginning in January 2016, and accumulating more than 1,000 images and videos of child sexual abuse and animal pornography.

His offending was uncovered after police linked an IP address associated with the distribution of these illegal images to his residence.

On November 7, 2019, officers arrived at Mitchell’s home with a warrant to conduct a search.

During the search, Mitchell reportedly told the officers, “the items you will be interested in will be in my room,” indicating his awareness of his illegal activities.

The police seized a laptop, which upon analysis revealed a horrifying collection of indecent material.

Investigators found 368 ‘category A’ images, which are classified as the most severe and explicit type of child pornography.

Additionally, they discovered 320 ‘category B’ images and videos, along with 333 ‘category C’ images and videos, depicting children in various stages of abuse.

The material also included 70 images and videos of extreme pornography involving animals.

The content was created over a span of nearly four years, from January 2016 to November 2019.

Prosecutor Adam Williams emphasized that Mitchell’s offending was not a fleeting incident but a prolonged period of criminal activity.

The court was informed that Mitchell had lost his job following the revelation of his crimes, highlighting the personal and social consequences of his actions.

During the court proceedings, Judge Campbell described the material found on Mitchell’s devices as some of the worst she had ever encountered.

She detailed a particularly disturbing 17-minute video showing a girl estimated to be between 10 and 18 months old being sexually abused.

The judge noted that the child was crying and appeared to be in visible distress and pain.

Another graphic video involved a dog performing a sex act on a child estimated to be between six and eight years old.

Judge Campbell pointed out that the majority of the content involved children aged between four and eight years old, emphasizing the real victims behind the images.

She stated, “These are real children and there are a number of different victims,” underscoring the severity of the crimes.

Addressing Mitchell directly, the judge remarked that his offending stemmed from a long-standing pattern of pornography use driven by loneliness and boredom.

She explained that such images are manufactured specifically for consumers like him, creating a dangerous market for these illicit materials.

The judge concluded that the gravity of the offenses warranted a custodial sentence.

Mitchell pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of a child and one count of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving an animal.

As a result, he was sentenced to 16 months in prison.

The court also imposed a ten-year sexual harm prevention order, designed to restrict his future conduct and protect the public.

Mitchell will serve half of his sentence before being eligible for release.

He appeared at Reading Crown Court on Friday, May 21, to receive his sentence.

Earlier, in April 2021, Mitchell had pleaded guilty at Reading Magistrates’ Court to similar charges, including making over 1,000 indecent images of children and possessing six extreme images involving animals.

The police had arrested him in November 2019 after discovering his activities through his IP address.

During the search, Mitchell admitted that the illicit material was stored in his room.

The police found a total of 368 ‘category A’ images, 320 ‘category B’ images, 333 ‘category C’ images, and six images involving animals.

Because of his guilty plea, Mitchell is now required to notify authorities of any future offenses and inform police if he resides with anyone under 18.

Judge Sam Goozee, who was present during the earlier hearing, remarked that Mitchell deserved a harsher punishment than what magistrates could impose.

Mitchell remains on unconditional bail and awaits sentencing at Reading Crown Court, where a more comprehensive penalty will be determined for his extensive and disturbing criminal conduct.
