MURDERER MICHAEL MCLAUGHLIN REARRESTED IN BRAY AFTER TARGETING TEENAGER
Convicted murderer Michael McLaughlin has been swiftly returned to custody in Bray, just days after it was revealed that he had shared his phone number with a young woman approximately the same age as his 1981 victim, Jill Bishop. McLaughlin, now 50 years old, was released from his life sentence last year after serving time for the brutal killing of Jill in Bray nearly four decades ago.His recent re-incarceration came to light when authorities learned of the story published in Monday's edition of the Herald. A source confirmed that concerns about McLaughlin's potential inappropriate behavior prompted his re-arrest. He is now awaiting a new hearing before the Parole Board, which will determine his future release prospects.
It is understood that McLaughlin was taken back into custody on Thursday after arriving at Mountjoy Prison to fulfill his legal obligation of signing in as part of his release conditions. The incident has raised alarm among local residents and authorities alike.
The situation came to public attention after a Dublin teenager, who was approached by McLaughlin, recognized his photograph in the newspaper. Her father expressed relief that the girl was now aware of McLaughlin’s identity and intentions. "Having considered all the facts, we feel we did the right thing," he stated. "My daughter does not have to look over her shoulder now. Other girls in the area can feel safer too."
Jill Bishop’s sister, Karen, emphasized the importance of the media’s role in publicizing McLaughlin’s image. "The fact that McLaughlin is back behind bars proves that making his picture public was crucial," she said. She also advocated for mandatory electronic tagging of all serious offenders upon their release, asserting, "This should be mandatory."
The young woman who was approached by McLaughlin recounted her experience, saying, "If I hadn’t seen the picture, I wouldn’t have known how dangerous the man who had been repeatedly approaching me has been in the past." She described how McLaughlin approached her at her workplace, a café located north of Dublin city.
"There was something weird about him. It wasn’t just casual conversation. It was like, ‘What do you do?’ and ‘What are your hobbies?’ and ‘Where are you going to college?’ and even ‘Where do you live?’" she explained. She recounted an incident around Christmas when McLaughlin slipped a piece of paper to her, which contained his phone number and a message saying, ‘Call after 2pm on a weekday. Mick.’ She found this behavior strange and unsettling.
Approximately two weeks later, McLaughlin called her and asked her to contact him. She also noticed him approaching her in other locations, such as the city centre, where he would attempt to initiate conversations. She tried to remain polite and avoid making a scene during these encounters.
The publication of McLaughlin’s photograph in the Herald was a turning point. A fellow worker in the café recognized him and drew the young woman’s attention to the image. Her distress was compounded by her concern for Jill Bishop, whose murder McLaughlin committed decades ago. "I was very upset over it, and for the girl he had killed," she said. "How can someone do that, go to prison for years and then come out and start linking up with young women the same age as his victim?"
McLaughlin’s heinous crime involved meeting Jill Bishop at a Halloween disco held in a hotel, where he assaulted her. Her naked body was discovered the following day, revealing the brutality of his attack. In addition to beating her to death, McLaughlin forced a £1 coin down her throat, highlighting the violent nature of his crime.
