    MICHAEL MARTIN FROM GRIMSBY SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOGS IN EAST MARSH

    Michael Richard Martin, born on October 16, 1984, and residing on Hainton Avenue in Grimsby, was found guilty of neglecting and causing unnecessary suffering to two dogs kept in deplorable conditions. The dogs, an English Bull Terrier named Bella and an American Bulldog cross called Spike, were discovered in a state of severe neglect at Martin's former residence on Eleanor Street, East Marsh, on September 3, 2019.

    Authorities uncovered the animals living in an environment that was both filthy and unsuitable for their care. The cage in which Bella and Spike were confined contained old, dirty rags serving as bedding, which was grossly inadequate and contributed to the dogs' suffering. Bella, in particular, was suffering from an untreated skin condition that had left her skin red, sore, and patchy with fur loss across her body, face, and legs. She was also slightly underweight, indicating malnutrition or neglect.

    Veterinary reports confirmed that Bella’s nails had curled into her pads, causing her significant pain and difficulty walking. The nails had been cut by a veterinarian after her removal from the home, but prior to that, her ingrowing nails had caused her considerable discomfort. Spike, described as active and friendly but slightly overweight, was also suffering from an untreated ear infection. Despite being prescribed medication, he had not received the necessary treatment, which further compromised his health.

    Prosecutor Rachel Taylor detailed the dogs' conditions, emphasizing the neglect evident in their appearance and environment. The vet's assessment described the living space as
