The most recent incident took place in Cullohill, County Laois, on March 4, where Martin attempted to abduct an 11-year-old girl, an act that has garnered widespread condemnation and concern.

According to court reports, Martin approached the young girl while she was playing with her two brothers, aged 10, in a rural area of Cullohill. He drove a jeep and managed to forcibly lift the girl into the vehicle through the driver’s side door. The girl struggled fiercely, kicking and fighting to escape, while her 10-year-old brother bravely clung onto the vehicle, attempting to prevent her abduction. Despite Martin’s efforts to drive away, the boy’s quick thinking and courage allowed him to continue hanging onto the jeep, even as it sped off.

Gardaí at Portlaoise Circuit Court revealed that CCTV footage from local businesses and residences was instrumental in tracking down Martin. The vehicle, a jeep, had been seen acting suspiciously in the area of Durrow prior to the incident.

Martin, who hails from Waterford city, was arrested the following day outside Castlecomer after police stopped the vehicle. During questioning, he admitted to stealing the jeep but denied attempting to abduct the children. Both the girl and her brother later identified him in separate police lineups at Portlaoise Garda Station. In July, Martin pleaded guilty to the charge of false imprisonment.

Judge Keenan Johnson, presiding over the case, described the bravery of the children as “exceptional” and commended Gardaí for their diligent work. He noted that Martin’s history of prior convictions, including a 2003 abduction of a 14-year-old girl, underscored the danger he posed. The judge sentenced Martin to 13 years in prison, with a 25% remission, meaning he will be eligible for release at around age 45. In addition to the Laois incident, Martin’s criminal history includes a 2003 kidnapping of a 14-year-old girl in Baltinglass, County Wicklow. Locals there expressed shock upon seeing Martin, who had boasted in a newspaper interview about knocking out Larry Murphy, a notorious rapist. Residents described him as a “thug” and expressed fear of his presence in the community. The woman who spoke to the Sunday World recounted her disapproval of Martin’s boasting, stating she would not allow her daughters near him.

Martin’s criminal record is extensive, with convictions for fraud, robbery, assault, threats to kill, and false imprisonment. His history of violence and predatory behavior has led to widespread concern about his potential to harm more children. Currently, Martin is detained at the Midlands Prison, housed on the G Division alongside convicted killer Graham Dwyer.
