MICHAEL LOVERIDGE FROM CLITHEROE CAUGHT WITH INDECENT PHOTOS OF YOUNG GIRLS IN LANCASHIRE

In July 2016, a serious incident involving a Lancashire-based solicitor from Clitheroe came to light, leading to disciplinary action and public concern. Michael Loveridge, aged 62, was found to be in possession of inappropriate images depicting young girls, which resulted in his suspension from practicing law. The case was brought to the attention of the Solicitors’ Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) after police issued a caution to Loveridge for possessing four indecent photographs of girls in compromising poses, along with a short video.

These images and the video were discovered during an investigation, prompting police to caution Loveridge. The images involved girls aged approximately 14 to 16, and Loveridge was found to have searched for content related to teenage girls and cheerleaders. He believed that the individuals depicted were over 18, a detail he maintained during the tribunal hearing. The SDT was informed that Loveridge ran his own legal practice from Well Terrace in Clitheroe, which he was forced to close following the incident. The closure involved settling substantial insurance costs estimated at £40,000, and he subsequently took on a role as a consultant solicitor for another firm, which was aware of his disciplinary issues.

During the tribunal hearing held in London, Loveridge admitted to two misconduct allegations. His legal representative, Nick Trevette, argued that the images were of the lowest category of seriousness and involved teenagers, not young children. Trevette also highlighted that Loveridge had proactively contacted his own solicitors shortly after accepting the police caution, demonstrating a degree of responsibility by reporting the matter to the appropriate authorities.

However, tribunal chairman Ashok Ghosh emphasized the gravity of the offense, stating, “While the tribunal was satisfied that the respondent’s offence was at the least serious end of the scale for such matters, it was nevertheless a serious matter.” Ghosh underscored the importance of trust and integrity expected from legal professionals, especially given the damaging nature of child pornography and the critical need to protect children’s welfare.

As a consequence of his misconduct, Loveridge was suspended from practicing law for a period of 12 months. The tribunal also ordered him to pay costs amounting to £3,000 related to the disciplinary proceedings. Additionally, Loveridge was required to cease his practice and settle his insurance obligations, effectively ending his legal career in Clitheroe and beyond. The case served as a stark reminder of the importance of ethical conduct within the legal profession and the serious repercussions of misconduct involving minors.
