BRISTOL MAN JAILED FOR HISTORIC CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
A Bristol resident aged 77, Michael Hole, who committed sexual offences against three boys many years ago, has finally been held accountable for his actions.The court’s ruling suggests he could spend the rest of his life incarcerated.
At Bristol Crown Court, it was revealed that Hole, of Long Down Avenue, sexually abused the young victims over a period of about 15 years, involving molestation and inappropriate touching, which have had lasting effects on the victims’ mental health.
He admitted to 12 counts of indecent assault and eight counts of gross indecency.
Judge William Hart sentenced him to 13 years, with the stipulation that he serve at least two-thirds of this period in prison, along with a further year on extended licence.
The judge commented that Hole was once perceived as a respectable member of society, but his life concealed “three very dark secrets” revealed through the offences.
Prosecutor Alicia Doble explained that Hole groped the boys, performed sex acts on them, and coerced them into doing the same for him.
When first approached by police, Hole deny some allegations but later accepted responsibility.
One complainant shared an impact statement acknowledging that the revelation of the abuse was “a huge weight off my shoulders” and expressed hope for closure.
Another victim spoke of ongoing struggles with mental health issues, attributing these to childhood trauma, and suggested that healing might take time.
The third victim described feelings of low self-esteem, anxiety, and a lack of confidence.
Defence attorney Daniel Woodman stated that Hole wishes to apologise through him for the harm caused.
He noted that Hole is aware that apologies cannot undo the damage.
Woodman said that Hole anticipates dying in prison and described him as ashamed, feeling alienated from his community.
Despite this, he highlighted that before these crimes, Hole had lived an unblemished and productive life.
He concluded by saying that Hole appears remorseful and expects to face a significant custodial sentence, which he believes will likely lead to his death in custody.
