MICHAEL HETHERINGTON SENTENCED IN DAVENTRY FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE CASE
A man from Daventry, Northamptonshire, has been handed a significant prison sentence after being convicted of multiple counts of child sexual abuse. Michael Hetherington, aged 41, was found guilty of 17 separate charges related to the sexual exploitation of a young girl. The abuse allegations date back to May 2014, when the victim was only 13 years old, and continued over a period of three and a half years, causing severe emotional and psychological trauma.During the sentencing hearing held at Northampton Crown Court, Judge David Herbert emphasized the gravity of the crimes committed by Hetherington. The judge ordered that Hetherington serve a minimum of eight years in prison before being eligible for parole. Furthermore, Hetherington has been placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, a measure that ensures ongoing monitoring of his activities. In addition to the prison sentence, he was issued an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his contact with minors and imposes other conditions aimed at preventing further harm.
According to Northamptonshire Police, the abuse came to an end when the victim, demonstrating remarkable bravery, disclosed the incidents to a safeguarding officer at her school. This courageous act prompted an investigation, leading to Hetherington’s conviction. The victim was subsequently diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition characterized by frequent panic attacks and episodes of self-harm, highlighting the profound impact of the abuse on her mental health.
Detective Sergeant Tom Curlett-New commented on the case, stating, "The victim showed immense courage in coming forward to disclose the abuse. As a result, Hetherington has now been locked up for a very long time and will no longer pose a serious risk to young girls." The case underscores the importance of vigilance and support for victims of such heinous crimes, and the justice system’s commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals from predators like Hetherington.
