MICHAEL HENDERSON JAILED IN NEWCASTLE AFTER VICTIM'S BRAVE REPORT AT SAFE SPACES PHARMACY
A man named Michael Henderson has been sentenced to prison after his victim reported the assault at a Boots pharmacy in Newcastle.
Northumbria Police commended the victim for her quick thinking and bravery following the attack in 2019.
Henderson, 39, visited the victim at her home on June 14, during which he assaulted her in her bedroom.
Fearing retaliation and unable to report the assault directly to police at that time, the woman visited a nearby Boots pharmacy in West Denton the following day.
She felt safe to seek help there because Boots participates in the Safe Spaces scheme, which provides safe environments for individuals experiencing domestic abuse and sexual violence.
With her consent, trained staff at the pharmacy contacted Northumbria Police and reported the incident.
Detective Constable Victoria Threadgold, who led the investigation, highlighted the victim’s bravery, saying, “This victim has suffered the most awful sexual violence and I can't commend her enough for coming forward to report to a Safe Space.
It is with thanks to her quick-thinking and incredible bravery that Henderson is now behind bars and hopefully, she can begin rebuilding her life.” Henderson was questioned by authorities, denying the rape allegation.
However, he was convicted in December 2021 at Newcastle Crown Court and sentenced on March 11 to six years in prison.
DC Threadgold also praised the staff at the Boots pharmacy, stating, “It is testament to their specialist training, empathy, and support that she has had the strength to speak out.” She emphasized the importance of Safe Spaces, saying, “Safeguarding is everyone's business, and these third-party reporting schemes help encourage victims to come forward, which can truly save lives.” In addition to his prison sentence, Henderson, of Bamburgh Walk in Gosforth, will be required to register as a sex offender for life and has been issued an indefinite restraining order.
