SHOCKING CRIME: MICHAEL HAYES OF STAMFORD SENTENCED TO 24 YEARS FOR ABUSE OF CHILDREN
In a harrowing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Stamford, Michael Hayes, a 65-year-old man, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 24 years after being found guilty of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against three young victims. The crimes, which spanned over eight years from 2008 to 2015, involved a systematic campaign of abuse that left deep scars on those affected.Hayes, residing on Hillary Close in Stamford, was convicted at Lincoln Crown Court on June 21 of a total of 18 sexual offenses, including six counts of rape. The severity and duration of his crimes prompted the court to impose a significant sentence, reflecting the gravity of his actions. Judge Simon Hirst, presiding over the case, described Hayes’s conduct as 'systematic' and driven solely by his own gratification. In his sentencing remarks, Judge Hirst emphasized the disturbing nature of the abuse, stating, “Your abuse, which you carried out for your own gratification, has rightly been described as a campaign.”
As part of his punishment, Hayes was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his movements post-release. The judge further declared, “My assessment of you today is that you are dangerous,” underscoring the threat Hayes poses to society.
During the court proceedings, Duncan O’Donnell, the prosecutor, revealed that two of the victims were young girls, while the third was a young boy. Victims’ statements were read aloud in court, with two of them expressing feelings of intense anger and recounting episodes of self-harm as a consequence of the abuse they endured. These testimonies highlighted the profound and lasting impact of Hayes’s actions on their lives.
In addition to the 24-year prison sentence, Hayes faces an extended license period of two years following his release, during which he will be subject to strict supervision. The defense, represented by Mark Watson, argued that Hayes was not in good health and was not a fit individual, noting that he has been under constant watch since being remanded into custody. Watson also mentioned that Hayes was hospitalized shortly before the trial, indicating ongoing health issues and previous attempts at self-harm.
Overall, the case has brought to light the disturbing reality of sexual abuse within the community of Stamford, and the court’s decision aims to serve justice for the victims while protecting society from further harm.
