MICHAEL HANCOCK AND HIS DISTURBING ONLINE PREDATION IN NEWCASTLE AND JARROW

Michael Hancock, a man from Edinburgh Road, Jarrow, found himself at the center of a disturbing case involving online predator activity in Newcastle.

Hancock, aged 59, had deliberately engaged in an online conversation with what he believed was a 12-year-old girl, but in reality, he was communicating with an undercover police officer.

This incident highlights the dangers of online grooming and the serious legal repercussions that can follow.

The case began in October 2021 when an undercover officer created a false online profile claiming to be an 18-year-old from Tyne and Wear.

The police setup was part of ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend individuals involved in child exploitation.

Hancock initiated contact with this fake profile, believing he was speaking with a vulnerable young girl.

During their conversations, Hancock was told that the girl was only 12 years old and disclosed that he was 57 years old.

As discussions progressed, the conversation shifted to Snapchat, where Hancock's exchanges became increasingly sexual in nature.

He shared explicit photographs, including images of his legs submerged in a bath and shots of his groin area.

In one disturbing exchange, the profile used a child's arm with the words “show me” written on it, prompting Hancock to send further explicit images, including a photograph of his genitals.

Prosecutor Ian Cook described the sequence of events, stating: “He said he would buy gifts for her and told her not to let her family know about their conversations.

Hancock even arranged to meet the girl at the Metrocentre in Gateshead, advising that if they encountered anyone they knew, they should pretend to be uncle and niece.

He cautioned her to be careful, saying that if he was caught, he would be labeled a paedophile.” Further into their communication, Hancock continued to ask inappropriate and sexual questions, discussing his sexual behaviors and expressing a desire to kiss and hold her all night.

The plans to meet at the Metrocentre were thwarted when police intercepted and arrested him before he could carry out his intended meeting.

Hancock pleaded guilty in court to charges of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.

Judge Julie Clemitson sentenced him to eight months imprisonment suspended for two years.

As part of his sentence, Hancock is subject to a sexual harm prevention order and will be required to sign the sex offenders register for ten years.

Additionally, a four-month curfew was imposed.

Judge Clemitson addressed Hancock directly, stating: “You believed that girl to be somewhat vulnerable and in the care system, yet instead of immediately ceasing communication or reporting the profile, you continued to chat.

You manipulated that child's trust gradually, by speaking in a non-sexual manner initially, offering gifts and outings, and then introducing sexual content.

You discussed meeting at the Metrocentre and even devised a cover story for possible detection.

Your actions exhibit predatory behavior.” She emphasized the serious nature of such offenses, warning that the absence of a real child's involvement did not diminish the harm or potential consequences of online predatory behavior.

Children suffer immensely because of online paedophiles, regardless of whether the interactions occur in the physical world or virtually.

Hancock's defense, represented by Sam Faulks, highlighted his previous good character, stating: “He has been a hardworking individual who contributes to society through his taxes.

He cares for his elderly uncle and, if incarcerated, will lose the support of his nephew.

These factors should be taken into account.” This case underscores the ongoing threat posed by online predators and reinforces the importance of vigilance and proper law enforcement responses in protecting vulnerable children from exploitation.
