MICHAEL FINLEY FROM COLCHESTER ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY FINDINGS

In May 2018, a disturbing case emerged involving Michael Finley, a resident of Colchester, who was found to possess indecent images of young girls as young as four years old.

Despite the severity of the evidence, Finley managed to avoid imprisonment, a decision that has sparked considerable public concern.

According to court proceedings at Chelmsford Crown Court, authorities uncovered a significant collection of illicit material on multiple electronic devices belonging to Finley.

These included an external hard drive, a laptop, and a desktop computer.

The investigation revealed that the images ranged across various categories, with 12 classified as the most serious, Category A.

These images depicted young children in explicit situations, with some as young as four to six years old.

Additionally, there were 21 images in Category B and a staggering 283 in Category C, illustrating a broad spectrum of illegal content.

During police interviews, Finley initially responded with silence, answering ‘no comment’ to all questions.

However, he later admitted to three counts of making indecent images of children, acknowledging his involvement in the possession of such material.

The court heard that Finley's online searches included terms such as ‘incest cartoons,’ ‘pre-teen pictures,’ and ‘young porn,’ indicating a disturbing interest in illegal content involving minors.

Further searches included inquiries about whether BT could track browsing activity, suggesting an awareness of potential surveillance.

Prosecutor Charlotte Davison detailed the nature of the images, noting that the majority depicted females aged between 12 and 14, with the youngest in the collection being between four and six years old.

The images included both still photographs and moving images, with some of the most egregious involving children in explicit acts.

The evidence painted a clear picture of Finley's preferences and the disturbing extent of his collection.

In sentencing, Judge David Pugh emphasized the gravity of the crime, stating, “This is not a victimless crime, these are real children and the reason why they are treated in the way depicted in these images is because people like you view them.” Despite the seriousness of the case, Finley was ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid community service and a 60-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

The judge’s decision to avoid a custodial sentence has been met with criticism, given the nature of the offenses and the potential harm to the victims involved.
