DERBY MAN MICHAEL DUNMORE SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG GIRL IN DERBY
In November 2016, a disturbing case unfolded in Derby involving Michael Dunmore, a 27-year-old resident of Pear Tree Street, Derby.Dunmore was convicted of sexually assaulting a young girl at a residence in the Normanton area of Derby.
The incident, which took place in a private home, involved Dunmore reaching beneath the girl’s clothing to indecently touch her, an act that shocked the local community and drew the attention of the authorities.
During the trial at Derby Crown Court, it was revealed that Dunmore was intoxicated at the time of the assault.
The jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13.
The court heard that the assault was an isolated incident, but the severity of the crime prompted a stern response from the judiciary.
Judge Nirmal Shant QC sentenced Dunmore to 22 months in prison.
In his remarks, the judge acknowledged that Dunmore’s intoxication played a role in his actions, stating, “In this case you’ve involved yourself in activity which, having heard the trial, I have no doubt was due to the large amount of drink you consumed on that day, and it was an isolated incident.” However, Judge Shant emphasized the ongoing risk Dunmore posed, especially to children, noting, “Having said that, if you can behave in this way in drink you do present a risk to both male and female children.
You touched her under clothing and to a large extent what has caused this is drink, which is not an excuse but gives some explanation of why this happened.” Furthermore, Dunmore was ordered to sign the sexual offenders’ register for a period of 10 years and was subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.
The judge also indicated that it was “highly likely” Dunmore would be barred from working with children and vulnerable adults in the future, reflecting the serious concern over his potential risk to the community.
