MICHAEL BELVILLE FROM AXMINSTER SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES IN EAST DEVON

In a case that has shocked the local community of Axminster and the surrounding East Devon area, Michael Belville, aged 72, faced justice at Exeter Crown Court for serious charges related to the possession and distribution of indecent images of children. The proceedings revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior involving the use of digital devices to access and share illicit material.

According to court reports, Belville, who resides in Shute near Axminster, was found to have engaged in the distribution of child pornography through email communications. The investigation was initiated after police raided his residence in Axminster in May of the previous year, following intelligence that linked him to individuals involved in the sharing of such illegal content. During the raid, officers discovered that Belville had emailed some of the indecent images to other men, raising serious concerns about his involvement in the wider network of child exploitation.

Further examination of his electronic devices uncovered additional troubling evidence. A computer, which had been previously seized by Avon and Somerset Police during a search in June 2005, was found to contain downloaded indecent images. Notably, this computer had been returned to Belville after authorities initially found no illegal material on it. However, subsequent investigations revealed that he had reloaded the images onto the device, indicating a deliberate attempt to conceal his activities.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution outlined that Belville had pleaded guilty to five charges of distributing indecent images of children and four charges of possession. The images were classified according to severity, with most being categorized as Level One, the least offensive, although a few fell into Level Three, which is more serious. The grading system for such images ranges from Level One to Level Five, with the latter representing the most severe and disturbing content.

In mitigation, Belville’s legal representatives argued that most of the images involved were of the least offensive category. They also pointed out that Belville has no prior criminal record, which was considered during sentencing. The court was informed that Belville initially denied the allegations but admitted to using a program designed to wipe his computer’s hard drive regularly, which complicated the investigation.

Judge Jeremy Griggs, presiding over the case, emphasized that he was guided by legal standards and considered letters from Belville’s wife and medical advisors. The judge ordered that Belville must participate in a sex offender treatment program and be subject to supervision. Additionally, he was placed under a Sex Offender Prevention Order for a period of five years, reflecting the seriousness of his offenses and the need for ongoing monitoring to protect the community.
