HORSE BREEDER MICHAEL BEATTIE FROM LISBURN SENTENCED FOR GROOMING AND ABUSE OF TEENAGE GIRL IN NORTHERN IRELAND
In a case that has shocked the local community and cast a dark shadow over the reputation of a well-known horse breeder, Michael Harold Beattie, aged 42, from Bresagh Road in Lisburn, has been sentenced to four years in prison for serious offences involving the grooming and sexual abuse of a teenage girl. The court proceedings, held at Craigavon Crown Court in Coleraine, revealed disturbing details about Beattie's conduct and the extent of his criminal actions.Beattie was found guilty of multiple charges, including initiating sexual activity with a minor and engaging in sexual acts with a girl who was only 15 years old at the time. The offences came to light after a friend of the victim observed the two sharing a kiss in Beattie's yard, prompting an investigation that uncovered the full extent of his misconduct. The victim, who was performing chores at Beattie's stables on Bresagh Road, was subjected to grooming and abuse over a period that spanned from late December 2018 to early March 2019.
During the court hearing, Judge Peter Irvine KC emphasized the gravity of the offences, noting that the breach of trust and the nature of the crimes warranted a custodial sentence. Beattie was ordered to serve half of his four-year term in prison, with the remaining half under supervised licence conditions. Additionally, he was instructed to sign the police sex offenders register for life and was subjected to a seven-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order, reflecting the court's concern about the potential risk to the public.
The case was initiated when the victim's friend saw her and Beattie kissing, which led to police interviews in March and August 2019. Despite being questioned multiple times, Beattie maintained that the most sexual contact he had with the girl was a simple kiss on the cheek, claiming he was a married man and that the girl had tried to kiss him first. Prosecutor Ian Tannahill highlighted that Beattie’s denial was inconsistent with the evidence, including text messages and the context of their interactions.
Throughout the proceedings, it was revealed that Beattie had initiated the sexual contact, which was described by the prosecution as a relationship akin to that between a coach and an athlete. The court was told that the victim now recognizes that she was groomed and exploited by Beattie, who used his position of trust to manipulate her. Her victim impact statement expressed her realization that she had been used and abused, and she now understands the full extent of the grooming.
Defense counsel Rosemary Walsh argued that Beattie was remorseful and acknowledged the harm caused. She pointed out that Beattie’s guilty plea came at the last minute, just before the trial was set to commence, and emphasized that his involvement in the community and his profession would be significantly impacted by the publicity surrounding the case. She urged the court to consider these factors when determining the sentence.
Judge Irvine, in delivering his verdict, stated that Beattie had engaged in a clear pattern of grooming, making remarks designed to encourage the victim to participate in sexual activities. The judge underscored the detrimental effects on her mental health and overall well-being, describing the case as a “spectacular fall from grace.” He also noted that if Beattie had not admitted guilt, he would have faced a longer sentence of five years, given the severity of the offences and the aggravating circumstances involved.
In a related development earlier in April 2023, it was reported that Beattie had told his young victim he was willing to leave his wife for her and had threatened to disclose their relationship to others, despite her being under the age of consent. The court was informed that Beattie disputed some aspects of the prosecution’s case, including claims that he had told the girl he was prepared to leave his wife. Nonetheless, facing a jury and with the victim ready to testify, Beattie ultimately confessed to all eight charges, which included six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a minor and two counts of inciting sexual activity.
The offences, committed over a period of approximately two and a half months, carry a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison. The court scheduled a sentencing hearing for the upcoming Friday, where Beattie’s fate will be formally decided. The case has left a lasting impact on the local community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and the need to protect vulnerable young individuals from exploitation by those in positions of trust.
