MENACHEM LEVY SHOCKS GOLDDERS GREEN WITH YEARS OF SEXUAL ABUSE ON 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Golders Green community, Menachem Levy, a 41-year-old man residing on Princes Park Avenue, has been sentenced to three years in prison for the repeated sexual assault of a young girl over a span of six years. Levy’s conviction follows a lengthy investigation and a trial held at Wood Green Crown Court, where he was found guilty in May of indecently assaulting a female under the age of 16.The abuse began in December 1999 when Levy first targeted the girl, who was only 14 at the time. The incident took place at her family’s home in Hendon, marking the start of a series of disturbing assaults. Over the next several years, Levy continued to subject the girl to sexual abuse at various locations, including his own residence, until December 2005. The prolonged nature of these offenses highlights the severity and persistence of Levy’s misconduct.
Throughout this ordeal, Levy employed manipulative tactics, repeatedly telling the young victim that she was to blame for the abuse. He also warned her that if she disclosed what was happening, she would face serious trouble. Both Levy and the girl are members of the Orthodox Jewish community, which added a layer of complexity to the case, given the close-knit nature of their community and the potential for stigma and silence.
In September 2010, the victim attempted to seek some form of closure by writing Levy a letter, asking him to openly admit his wrongdoings and to apologize in front of a Rabbi and her family. Levy refused to acknowledge his actions or to offer any apology, further compounding the trauma experienced by the victim.
The courage of the young girl in coming forward was instrumental in bringing Levy to justice. She reported the abuse to police in May 2011, prompting an investigation by detectives from the Metropolitan Police. Levy was subsequently arrested at his home in July 2011. The legal process culminated in his being charged in April of the following year.
Detective Constable Alistair Woods, from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, expressed admiration for the victim’s bravery. He stated, “The victim has shown a tremendous amount of courage to come forward and give a detailed account of the abuse she suffered by Levy. No one should suffer in silence – I would urge anyone who is a victim to come and speak to us and let us help you. Specially trained officers will support you, and thoroughly investigate your claims.”
Woods emphasized the gravity of Levy’s actions, noting, “Menachem Levy abused his victim on numerous occasions – he also abused the trust of a close-knit community. This sentencing demonstrates that the courts will prosecute those who prey on vulnerable people, irrespective of their background or status. I hope today’s sentencing can offer some kind of closure to the victim and her family.”
