EXETER PAEDOPHILE MATTHEW WOOD CAUGHT IN UNDERCOVER POLICE STING
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Exeter, a man named Matthew Wood was apprehended by police officers conducting an undercover operation aimed at tackling online child exploitation. The incident unfolded in April 2023 when Wood was caught sharing a hidden collection of child abuse images with an officer he believed was a parent of a young girl.
According to court reports, Wood initiated a conversation with what he thought was the father of a seven-year-old girl.
During their exchange, he expressed a disturbing desire to engage in sexual activity with the child.
The conversation took a darker turn when Wood proceeded to send the officer a large collection of indecent images of children, which he had downloaded from the internet.
These images included some of the most severe forms of abuse, depicting children of various ages in distressing and explicit situations, as detailed during the proceedings at Exeter Crown Court.
Initially, Wood denied having any sexual interest in children, claiming that he used social media platforms merely to combat loneliness.
However, evidence presented in court revealed that he had actively sought out and shared numerous indecent images.
Prosecutor Mr.
Nigel Wraith explained that police had launched the covert operation in November 2021, creating a fake social media profile to lure offenders.
Wood responded eagerly to the profile, asking about the child's whereabouts and requesting nude photographs.
The investigation uncovered that Wood had sent multiple indecent images and even provided a link to an online store and folder containing hundreds more illicit images.
Law enforcement officials executed a search warrant at Wood’s residence in January of the following year.
During questioning, he maintained his innocence regarding any sexual interest in children, reiterating that his online activity was driven by loneliness rather than criminal intent.
Despite his claims, the evidence was overwhelming.
Wood, aged 39 and residing on Bridespring Walk, pleaded guilty to six charges related to the creation, possession, and distribution of indecent images of children.
Judge David Evans addressed the court, describing the material found as the “most repellent kind of images,” and acknowledged the severity of Wood’s actions.
The judge also noted that Wood appeared genuinely remorseful and might now understand the harm caused by his behaviour.
A probation report assessed him as a low risk of reoffending and recommended rehabilitation.
In light of recent judicial considerations, including a Court of Appeal ruling highlighting the ongoing crisis of prison overcrowding, the judge decided to impose a suspended sentence rather than immediate imprisonment.
As part of his sentence, Wood was ordered to complete 40 days of rehabilitation supervised by probation services.
Additionally, he was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his future use of the internet to prevent further offences.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable victims from harm.
