ELGIN MAN MATTHEW SINCLAIR SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE IN EDINBURGH

In December 2019, a deeply disturbing case emerged involving Matthew Sinclair, a man from Elgin, who was convicted of heinous crimes against a two-year-old girl in Edinburgh. Sinclair, aged 28, was found guilty of raping the young child and sharing explicit images of the abuse online, actions that have shocked the local community and the nation alike.

Sinclair’s criminal behavior came to light after he carelessly left his mobile phone charging, which led a woman to discover incriminating messages on an app. Upon examining the device, she uncovered a series of disturbing communications and images that revealed the extent of Sinclair’s depravity. The messages included sexually explicit language and references to taboo subjects, including “kid sex,” indicating a disturbing interest in illicit activities involving children.

During the court proceedings at the High Court in Edinburgh, the judge condemned Sinclair’s actions, emphasizing the shocking nature of his conduct. The judge remarked, “In these courts, we are depressingly familiar with the depths to which some individuals will sink to satisfy their urges,” highlighting the severity of Sinclair’s crimes. Michael O’Grady QC, representing the prosecution, added, “Even so, some behavior still has the power to shock, and yours surely has.”

The court heard that Sinclair had committed acts of “breathtaking wickedness and depravity,” including raping the two-year-old girl on August 11 of that year. He also admitted to taking and distributing indecent photographs of the child on the same day. The images included photographs of the girl in a naked state, with one showing slight penetration, which were shared with an unidentified recipient via the messaging app Viber.

Evidence presented by cybercrime investigators revealed that Sinclair had sent four indecent images of the child, further illustrating the extent of his criminal conduct. The investigation uncovered a conversation between Sinclair and a user named “anonymous,” during which Sinclair asked, “You got any taboos?” and discussed their shared illicit interests.

Sinclair’s actions were described as “beyond description” by the judge, who also noted his apparent lack of empathy and failure to recognize the horrendous nature of his crimes. The court was told that Sinclair’s behavior demonstrated a profound disregard for the suffering of his victim.

In sentencing, the judge acknowledged Sinclair’s early guilty plea, which resulted in a reduction of his potential sentence from 18 years to 13 years in prison. Additionally, Sinclair was ordered to be placed under supervision for a further six years after his release, due to the “deeply disturbing” nature of his offenses and concerns about the risk he may pose to the public.
