MATTHEW SHERWOOD FROM WORCESTER DELAYS SENTENCE AGAIN AFTER COURTROOM INCIDENT
In Worcester, a case involving Matthew Sherwood, a man accused of serious sexual offenses, has faced yet another postponement, marking the seventh delay in his sentencing process. The delays have been marked by a series of unforeseen events, including a distressing incident in the courtroom that drew significant attention.
Matthew Sherwood, aged 37, from Mandalay Drive, Norton, near Worcester, was charged with multiple serious offenses related to child exploitation.
He admitted to attempting to cause or incite a child to engage in sexual activity, attempting to communicate sexually with a minor, and possessing indecent images of children.
These charges stem from incidents that allegedly occurred between January 31, 2020, and February 8, 2020.
The case was scheduled for its seventh hearing on Tuesday afternoon, July 5, at Worcester Crown Court.
As the proceedings commenced, Sherwood confirmed his identity, and the court began the process of delivering his sentence.
However, the atmosphere in the courtroom was abruptly disrupted when a woman in the public gallery suddenly fell, causing a loud crash that drew immediate concern from everyone present.
Judge Martin Jackson responded swiftly, announcing that he would temporarily retire from the bench to allow medical personnel to attend to the fallen woman.
He instructed court officers to take Sherwood down to the cells while the situation was assessed.
The incident caused a significant delay, with Sherwood’s family remaining in the courtroom during the emergency response.
Approximately thirty minutes later, the court resumed proceedings.
The judge noted that Sherwood’s mother was still in the public gallery, awaiting the arrival of a paramedic, and expressed understanding that she might be distressed by the ongoing delays.
Despite efforts to move the case to another courtroom, the judge explained that this was not feasible due to concurrent trials in other courtrooms.
Prosecutor David Jackson indicated that he had no objection to an adjournment, and the judge, with some reluctance, agreed to postpone the sentencing.
The new date was set for 11 a.m.
on Wednesday, July 6, with Sherwood being granted unconditional bail for the interim period.
Following the adjournment, Sherwood’s family left the court, only to be informed that an ambulance would be delayed for up to six hours, further complicating the situation.
The original sentencing date had been scheduled for March 2 but was postponed for six weeks, and the June hearing was canceled due to Sherwood being hospitalized at that time.
Throughout the legal process, supporters of Sherwood had taken measures to prevent media coverage, including creating a human shield outside Worcester Magistrates Court to block photographs of him.
The ongoing delays and courtroom incident highlight the complexities and emotional toll involved in this high-profile case, which continues to unfold in Worcester.
