DERBY MAN MATTHEW RATLCLIFFE SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN DERBY
In July 2020, a disturbing case emerged involving Matthew Ratcliffe, a resident of Derby, who was found to possess a significant collection of child abuse images on his mobile device. The police conducted an unannounced visit to Ratcliffe’s home in Derby, during which they seized his mobile phone.
Upon examination, authorities discovered that the device contained over 100 indecent images and videos depicting children, which Ratcliffe admitted he viewed for sexual gratification.
During the court hearing at Derby Crown Court, it was revealed that Ratcliffe, aged 43, had a troubling criminal history, with three previous convictions encompassing 37 offences, many of which involved similar indecent material.
The court was informed that he was classified as a “high risk” offender, prompting the judge to impose a lengthy custodial sentence to protect the public from further harm.
Judge Robert Egbuna, presiding over the case, emphasized the seriousness of Ratcliffe’s actions.
He pointed out that in September, police officers had visited Ratcliffe’s home unannounced and that he had deliberately concealed a new mobile phone, which he claimed was purchased solely for watching music videos.
However, the phone was found to contain searches for terms such as “Japan,” “three-year-old,” and “five-year-old,” indicating disturbing interests.
The judge described the content viewed by Ratcliffe as “depraved,” noting the pain and distress inflicted on the victims depicted in the videos.
The court heard that a pre-sentence report, prepared by an experienced officer, indicated that Ratcliffe had attempted to manipulate professionals involved in his case, minimizing the extent of his offending.
The report concluded that he posed a very high risk of causing serious harm to pre-pubescent girls under the age of ten.
As a result, the judge decided that an extended prison sentence was necessary to prevent future offenses and to safeguard the community.
Prosecutor Philip Plant detailed that the indecent images were created between August 11, 2018, and September 16, 2018.
The police examined the phone and found that the search terms used by Ratcliffe included references to children aged three and five, which heightened concerns.
The device was seized, and a subsequent search of the SIM card confirmed the presence of the illicit images and videos.
Specifically, authorities identified 19 images from Category A, which included eight videos—the most serious classification—along with four videos from Category B and 110 images from Category C.
The court was shown examples of the disturbing content, which depicted young children in exploitative situations.
Both a probation report and a risk assessment concluded that Ratcliffe was a “high risk” to children.
In court, Ratcliffe pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.
His sentence was extended to include four-and-a-half years in prison, followed by a four-and-a-half-year extended license period, reflecting the gravity of his offenses and the need for ongoing supervision to prevent further harm.
