In a disturbing turn of events in Derry, a mother has come forward to express her profound shock and anger following a violent incident involving relatives of Matthew Nixon, a man convicted of indecently assaulting her six-year-old daughter. Nixon, a resident of Forest Park in Derry, was in court yesterday where his eight-month prison sentence was officially confirmed after he admitted to the charges of indecent assault that occurred sometime between December 2004 and January 2005.

As the court proceedings concluded, tensions escalated outside the courtroom. The mother, who has chosen to remain anonymous, recounted that members of Nixon’s family displayed aggressive behavior towards her and her family immediately after the sentencing. She described how, in the court’s foyer, her family was subjected to intimidation and physical assault by Nixon’s relatives.

According to her account, one of Nixon’s family members grabbed her by the hair, prompting her to try to defend herself. During the altercation, she was struck on the side of her head by another family member. The situation quickly devolved into a chaotic row, with most of the aggression directed at her. Police officers intervened to separate the parties, but she expressed her disappointment with the attitude of one officer, who reportedly questioned why she did not simply let the incident go.

The mother emphasized her confusion and distress over the hostility directed at her, especially considering Nixon’s guilty plea for assaulting her young daughter. She questioned the motives behind her relatives’ aggressive behavior, stating, “I don’t know what this family’s problem is with us. Nixon pleaded guilty to assaulting my six-year-old daughter, yet they behave like this towards us.”

Following the incident, the mother sought medical attention at the Accident and Emergency Department at Altnagelvin Hospital, where she was X-rayed to determine if she sustained any serious injuries. Her ordeal did not end there; she has since obtained a non-molestation order against one of Nixon’s family members who threatened her at her home. She expressed her ongoing fears for her safety and her home, worried about what might happen next.

Reflecting on the events, she voiced her deep disappointment and emotional pain, stating, “I am shocked and upset at what has happened today. Is it not bad enough that my daughter should be indecently assaulted without this sort of thing happening after Nixon finally goes to prison?”
