OLDHAM MAN MATTHEW JONES CAUGHT WITH NEARLY 120,000 CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IMAGES IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Oldham, Matthew Jones, a 31-year-old resident, was found to be in possession of an alarming collection of child sexual abuse images.The police executed a raid on Jones's residence in October 2019, uncovering a vast digital stash on his computer system that included nearly 120,000 indecent images of children.
The court proceedings, held at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, revealed the disturbing details of the case, highlighting the severity of the material stored on Jones's devices.
Among the images discovered, some depicted children who were barely one year old, underscoring the heinous nature of the material involved.
The court was informed that the images were categorized into different levels of severity, with 16,202 classified as the most serious, known as Category A.
An additional 14,994 images fell into Category B, while approximately 85,000 images were rated as Category C.
Further investigations uncovered 2,122 prohibited images and 389 images of extreme pornography, emphasizing the extent of Jones's illegal activities.
During the initial police interview, Jones admitted that the computer in question was indeed his and was password-protected.
However, he subsequently refused to answer any further questions, raising concerns about his cooperation and the potential for further evidence.
The prosecution, led by Andrew Mackintosh, detailed the gravity of the case, emphasizing the significant number of highly illegal images found on Jones's devices.
In court, Jones pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children, as well as one charge each of possessing prohibited images and possessing extreme pornography.
The judge, Nield, acknowledged the serious nature of the offenses but also recognized the potential difficulties Jones might face in a custodial environment.
As a result, he imposed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, contingent upon Jones adhering to strict conditions.
These conditions include signing the sex offenders register for a period of ten years, complying with a sexual harm prevention order that restricts his internet activity, and completing 30 days of rehabilitation activities with the probation service.
The judge emphasized the importance of compliance, stating, “I realize the difficulties that you would experience in a custodial setting, and they cannot be over-estimated, even in usual circumstances.
But this sentence remains suspended over you.
It is therefore imperative that you keep to the terms upon which the sentence has been suspended.” Judge Nield’s sentencing aims to balance the need for punishment with the recognition of the offender’s potential for rehabilitation, but the case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by individuals involved in the possession and distribution of such heinous material in communities like Oldham.
