HICKINGBOTHAM FROM HULL FACES COURT OVER CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In February 2023, a serious warning was issued to individuals involved in the illicit viewing and sharing of indecent images of children through popular messaging applications.

Authorities emphasized that those engaging in such activities are risking immediate police intervention, often described as a 'knock on the door,' which could lead to arrest and prosecution.

Law enforcement officials highlighted the dangerous misconception among some offenders who believe that their participation is safe because many others are also involved in viewing and distributing these abhorrent images.

However, the Hull Crown Court made it clear that such actions carry severe consequences, including the possibility of lengthy imprisonment.

During the court proceedings, Matthew Hickingbotham, aged 23 and residing at Anson Villas, Paull, near Hull, pleaded guilty to three charges related to the possession and creation of indecent photographs of children.

The offences took place between August and September of 2021.

Prosecutor Holly Thompson detailed that Hickingbotham utilized a messaging and communication application to download illicit images from the internet.

Following a police investigation, authorities recovered 33 images from his mobile device.

These images were stored in a cache folder, but due to the removal of the app, they could not be accessed directly at the time of the investigation.

The images included eight classified as the most serious Category A, seven in Category B, and 18 in Category C.

The photographs depicted children aged between three and four years old, as well as others aged around 13, of both sexes.

The evidence indicated that Hickingbotham had actively joined groups within the app that facilitated the exchange of such disturbing material.

Initially, Hickingbotham denied having any sexual interest in children.

However, during the proceedings, he admitted to having such an interest but insisted that he would not act on it.

The court was informed that he had discovered and participated in groups dedicated to sharing these images.

Sentencing included a 30-day rehabilitation program, participation in a sex offenders' treatment scheme, and the imposition of a five-year sexual harm prevention order.

Additionally, Hickingbotham is required to register as a sex offender for five years.

Judge Bury addressed the defendant directly, stating, 'I don’t think you need to be told how close you were to going to prison.

I hope it will be the wake-up call that it appears to have been.' The court's message was clear: engaging in such activities is a grave offense with serious legal repercussions.
