MATTHEW HANCOCK FROM ROTHERHAM CAUGHT WITH CHILD INDECENT IMAGES AFTER POLICE RAID
In a serious case that has shocked the community of Rotherham, police executed a raid on the home of Matthew Hancock, a 39-year-old resident of Wilcox Green, Wingfield, following a tip-off about the possession of indecent images of children. The incident, which took place in April 2019, led to Hancock’s arrest and the subsequent discovery of a disturbing collection of illicit material stored across multiple devices.
During the hearing at Sheffield Crown Court on January 4, prosecutors detailed the findings from the police search.
Louise Reevell, representing the Crown, explained that the warrant was executed after authorities received credible information suggesting Hancock was in possession of such images.
The police seized two computer hard drives and a Samsung Galaxy mobile phone from his residence.
An examination of these devices revealed a total of 142 images categorized into three levels of severity: 48 images classified as Category A, which is considered the most serious, along with 42 Category B images and 52 Category C images.
These images depicted children in various states of abuse, with Category A images representing the most severe offenses.
Hancock attempted to justify his actions by claiming that he had transferred the images onto hard drives with the intent of learning how to delete them.
He stated that he had used specific search terms during his research, suggesting that his purpose was not sexual gratification but rather an attempt to understand or remove the material.
He also denied deriving any sexual pleasure from viewing the images, asserting that his motivations were purely investigative.
Despite these claims, Hancock, who has a prior criminal record for driving offenses, pleaded guilty to multiple charges.
He admitted to making two Category A images, two Category B images, and two Category C images between February 2017 and February 2019.
The court heard that his actions contributed to the ongoing market for such illicit content and furthered the exploitation of children.
Recorder Anthony Hawks addressed Hancock directly, emphasizing the gravity of his offenses.
He stated, “You had a perverted sexual interest despite your denials, and the sooner you face up to this problem, the better it will be for you and everyone else.” The judge also acknowledged Hancock’s personal difficulties, including physical and mental health issues, and noted that he had already suffered consequences, such as being forced out of his home and now living with his parents.
In sentencing, Recorder Hawks imposed a two-year community order on Hancock, which includes a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement aimed at addressing his behavior.
Additionally, Hancock was placed on the Sex Offender Register and subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years, reflecting the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing risk to the community of Rotherham.
