MATTHEW GROVES OF DONCASTER CONVICTED OF HORSE CRUELTY INVOLVING COLLAPSING FOAL

In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community in Doncaster, Matthew Groves, born around 1991 and residing at 83 Howbeck Drive, Edlington, DN12 1QH, was found guilty of severe cruelty towards horses, including a tragic incident involving a six-month-old foal that ultimately collapsed and died. The case came to light when concerns about the welfare of the animals prompted immediate action from animal rescue organizations and law enforcement authorities.

On Monday, September 19, 2016, Groves appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court to face charges that had been brought against him. The court proceedings marked the beginning of what was initially intended to be a trial, but Groves entered guilty pleas to four separate charges related to animal cruelty. The charges stemmed from neglect and mistreatment of horses under his care, which had severe consequences for the animals involved.

The incident that drew significant attention involved a young foal in distress, which was reported to the authorities by World Horse Welfare. Field Officer Sarah Tucker responded swiftly to the call, arriving at the scene to find the six-month-old foal in a critically weakened state, having collapsed in the field. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Tucker coordinated with the RSPCA, Bransby Horses, veterinary professionals, and police officers to ensure the safety of the remaining animals.

Under the provisions of the Animal Welfare Act (2006), the team successfully removed the collapsed foal along with two other ponies from the field. The condition of the ponies was also concerning, prompting further action. Despite issuing a Warning Notice to Groves regarding the remaining two ponies, which highlighted deficiencies in their diet and overall care, Groves failed to comply. As a result, in early January 2016, the ponies were also legally removed from his possession due to their deteriorating health and neglect.

Sarah Tucker described the scene she encountered as “tragic,” emphasizing the suffering endured by the animals. She explained, “The collapsed foal had clearly been in distress for some time. Because he was so weak, we decided that transporting him to the nearest rescue and rehoming center, operated by World Horse Welfare, was not feasible. Instead, we collaborated with Bransby Horses to take the foal to their Lincoln center for urgent care.”

Despite the efforts of veterinary expert Lynn Mabbit to save the young colt, the prognosis was grim. Sadly, the foal died shortly after being rescued, a heartbreaking outcome that underscored the severity of Groves’ neglect. The court’s sentencing reflected the gravity of the case, with authorities making it clear that Groves would no longer be permitted to keep horses or other equines in the future.

As part of his punishment, Matthew Groves was sentenced to 18 weeks in jail. Additionally, he was ordered to pay costs amounting to £750 and a victim surcharge of £80. Most notably, he received a lifetime ban on keeping any form of equine animals, a measure designed to prevent further cruelty and protect vulnerable animals from similar neglect in the future. This case has served as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglecting the needs of domesticated animals in Doncaster and beyond.
