MATTHEW DOBIE SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IN CAMBRIDGE FOR CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES
A man named Matthew Dobie has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 20 years after being convicted of serious child sexual offences. The offences, which have been described by the judiciary as 'wicked in the extreme,' involve disturbing acts committed against a young victim and have shocked the local community.
In December, Dobie was found guilty at a trial of two counts of raping a child and four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child.
The crimes were committed several years ago and involved a single victim.
Following the conviction, Dobie appeared before Bristol Crown Court on 18 February to be sentenced for his heinous acts.
The court proceedings revealed the gravity of his misconduct and the devastating impact on his victim.
Justice Julian Lambert did not hold back in his remarks, stating to Dobie, 'You are truly a monster.' The judge emphasized that the crimes committed by Dobie, who is 47 years old, were particularly egregious, especially considering that the incident was reported to Avon and Somerset Police only in 2020.
Until then, Dobie was a resident of South Gloucestershire before relocating to Cambridge.
The judge described Dobie’s treatment of his victim as 'despicable' and highlighted the profound damage inflicted.
Justice Lambert remarked, 'The extent of the damage which you did is utterly numbing.
The damage done is irreparable.' He further noted that Dobie was fully aware that his actions were wrong and classified his conduct as 'wicked in the extreme.' The court condemned Dobie’s choices, emphasizing his pursuit of his own corrupt sexual pleasures at the expense of ruining a young life.
The judge concluded his remarks by stating that few words could adequately capture the depth of Dobie's degeneracy, reiterating his designation as 'truly a monster.' The case was supported by the clear and courageous testimony of Dobie’s victim.
Detective Constable Melanie Downton, who was involved in the investigation, commended the victim's 'immense bravery' in coming forward and supporting the prosecution.
She pointed out that Dobie refused to take responsibility for his reprehensible actions and that the sentence reflects not only the seriousness and impact of his crimes but also his efforts to avoid accountability.
Suzie Butler, a Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS South West, expressed appreciation for the victim's courage in speaking out.
She stated, 'The victim showed immense courage in speaking out against the perpetrator of these awful crimes and supporting the prosecution.' Butler also emphasized that the justice served in this case aims to reassure other victims that reporting abuse is supported and that the police and CPS are committed to securing justice.
Dobie received a substantial sentence of 20 years in prison, with a further four years to be served on licence.
He will be required to serve at least two-thirds of his custodial sentence before being eligible for parole.
In addition to his imprisonment, Dobie was placed on the sex offenders register and was subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.
Police authorities also encouraged any individuals who have been victims of sexual abuse to seek support.
They mentioned The Bridge sexual assault referral centre as a resource for victims seeking assistance and guidance in overcoming their trauma.
