MATTHEW CLARKE: COLCHESTER PAEDOPHILE USED SNAPCHAT MAPS TO LURE YOUNG GIRLS AND PREYED ON THEM IN ESSEX
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Colchester, Essex, Matthew Clarke, aged 23, has been convicted of a series of heinous sexual offences involving underage girls.Clarke, who was employed at a Tesco store in Colchester, exploited modern technology to target vulnerable victims over a span of five years, grooming and abusing young girls as young as 12.
The court heard that Clarke used the Snapchat application, specifically its Snapmap feature, to track the whereabouts of his victims.
This feature allows users to see the geographical location of others who have it enabled, and Clarke took advantage of this to locate girls in the store where he worked.
By monitoring their movements within the Tesco store, he was able to make in-person contact with them, often after engaging in conversations that initially appeared innocent but gradually turned sexual in nature.
Clarke's grooming process involved chatting with the girls, encouraging them to send explicit images, and then using these images to blackmail them into further compliance.
He would threaten to make their images public if they refused his demands, creating a climate of fear and coercion.
The court was told that he had sexual conversations with the victims, some of whom he met face-to-face, leading to the abuse of three girls.
The case came to light after one of the victims' mothers reported her concerns to the police in April 2019.
Following this report, Clarke was arrested in May 2019.
An investigation uncovered a total of 35 different conversations on Snapchat involving girls under the age of 16.
The police also found evidence of Clarke's inappropriate communications and activities involving minors.
At Ipswich Crown Court, Clarke pleaded guilty to 30 sex offences, including sexual assault by penetration, sexual assault, causing or inciting sexual activity with a child, causing a child to watch sexual acts, sexual communication with a child, and making indecent images of a child.
The offences spanned from February 2015 to November 2020, involving girls aged between 12 and 15.
Judge Emma Peters sentenced Clarke to 12 years in prison, emphasizing the severity of his crimes.
She described him as a significant threat to children, stating, “You are a threat to children and you are every parent’s worst nightmare.” In addition to his prison term, Clarke will serve a further eight years on extended licence and will remain on the sex offender register for life.
Prior to this conviction, Clarke had admitted to 30 child sex offences during a hearing in August 2021.
He appeared in custody at Ipswich Crown Court, where he acknowledged his guilt to multiple charges, including sexual assault and inciting sexual activity with minors.
The offences involved girls aged 12 to 15 and took place over nearly six years.
Clarke's arrest was carried out by the Essex Police child sexual exploitation proactive investigation team, following a warrant executed in Colchester.
During the proceedings, he also denied some charges, including engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child and blackmail.
The court ordered a probation assessment to determine whether Clarke should be classified as a dangerous offender, which could lead to an extended or life sentence.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 24 at Ipswich Crown Court.
