MATTHEW CLARIDGE'S SHOCKING CHILD SEX ABUSE IN CARDIFF REVEALED
In December 2018, a disturbing case involving a convicted paedophile named Matthew Claridge came to light, revealing the extent of his heinous activities targeting young girls through online platforms in Cardiff.Claridge, aged 49, was sentenced to eight years in prison after he was found guilty of creating indecent videos of minors using a popular live streaming application.
Claridge's criminal conduct involved attempting to coerce girls as young as ten into providing explicit images and videos of themselves.
He employed manipulative tactics, including offering monetary incentives and threatening to publicly share any images or videos if the victims refused or tried to withdraw.
The Cardiff Crown Court heard that Claridge exploited his technical skills to send hundreds of scripted messages under his screen name, CuddleMonkey, to vulnerable children on the Live.me platform, which allows users to broadcast live videos from their devices.
One of his messages read: "hey gorgeous girl...
your SOOO beautiful how would you like to top up your pocket money and really treat yourself??
if you want to do some private shows for me, I can send you money...
message me back and we can chat about it.
it’s just what you’ve been doing, but you get money for it.
love you loads." Claridge encouraged responses from children, urging them to send him custom pictures or videos, and suggested they move from the public live streaming environment to private messaging apps where he could continue his exploitation undetected.
In one disturbing instance, Claridge contacted a 12-year-old girl in the UK, offering her extra pocket money in exchange for explicit content.
His message stated: "Want a little extra pocket money?
A few girls on here do custom pics and vids for me in return for cash, clothes, jewellery etc.
If yr interested, you’d have to keep it super secret!
message me back and we can chat.
Love you." The girl later reported to police that she was pressured into exposing her breasts during a live stream, illustrating the coercive tactics Claridge used to manipulate his young victims.
Investigators uncovered videos on Claridge’s tablet device depicting a 12-year-old girl from the UK removing her clothes and a girl from the United States performing a sex act, both recorded from their live broadcasts.
The US girl was reportedly offered $100 (£79) for her participation.
These videos were recorded by capturing the live streams, further evidencing Claridge’s exploitation.
Prosecutor Simon Parry highlighted that Claridge would threaten and intimidate children into compliance, warning them that their images would be shared publicly with friends and family if they ceased sending him material.
His malicious tactics extended beyond individual manipulation; he operated an online chatroom called #TheOtherPlace, dedicated to child sex abuse, where users shared links to thousands of indecent images of children.
Claridge also maintained a blog that provided instructions on accessing the chatroom, along with technical advice and rules for its use.
He boasted about the lax moderation on Live.me and advised users to employ anonymous communication tools such as Tor and virtual private networks to evade detection.
At the time of his offending, which spanned from April 2015 to May 2017, Claridge was already on licence after a previous conviction for sexually assaulting a child in 2008.
His arrest was carried out by the National Crime Agency in May of the following year, as part of an investigation into two other men, Brett McBain, aged 53, and David Buckley, aged 56, who had founded the chatroom.
Both men received prison sentences—five years and three years respectively—for distributing indecent images of children in July 2017.
Claridge pleaded guilty to 13 charges, including four counts of making indecent images of children, two counts of possessing such images, and two counts of attempting to cause a girl under 13 to engage in non-penetrative sexual activity.
He also admitted to conspiracy to distribute indecent images, distributing indecent images himself, blackmail, inciting sexual activity with a child, and engaging in sexual communication with a minor.
During sentencing, Cardiff Recorder Judge Eleri Rees described Claridge as a continuing danger to children.
She emphasized that his actions were indiscriminate, targeting large numbers of children with the intent of exploiting them.
The judge condemned Claridge for persuading, cajoling, bribing, and threatening his victims, showing a complete disregard for their distress and that of their families.
Claridge, a resident of Gwaelod-y-Garth in Cardiff, was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Additionally, he was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and will remain on the sex offenders register for life, underscoring the severity of his crimes and the ongoing threat he poses to the community.
