MATT CASSIDY FROM KINGSTON UPON HULL SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO WEST HIGHLAND TERRIER

Matthew Cassidy, a resident of Rosedale Grove in Kingston upon Hull, was convicted in 2018 of heinous acts of animal cruelty involving a West Highland terrier named Charlie. The incident drew significant public attention and prompted a swift response from animal welfare authorities. Cassidy admitted to beating, dragging, and throwing the defenseless dog, actions that shocked the local community and prompted multiple reports from concerned citizens.

According to court proceedings, numerous witnesses observed Cassidy's aggressive behavior towards Charlie as he moved through the streets of Hull, particularly around the Anlaby Road and Linnaeus Street areas. Witnesses recounted seeing Cassidy lift Charlie by the scruff of his neck, causing the dog to make coughing and choking sounds, and later grabbing him by the collar and shouting in his face. On one occasion, Cassidy reportedly threw Charlie to the ground after these aggressive interactions.

Between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm on the day of the incident, several members of the public contacted police and the RSPCA to report the distressing scenes. A police community support officer was approached by a member of the public after two teenagers intervened and took Charlie away from Cassidy, who was seen mistreating the animal. Fortunately, Charlie was rescued and taken into the care of the RSPCA, and he has since made a full recovery.

RSPCA inspector Jilly Dickinson provided details of the investigation, stating, “Cassidy was seen kicking and dragging Charlie around as he walked around the Anlaby Road and Linnaeus Street areas with him on May 21, 2018. Witnesses saw Cassidy pick Charlie up by the scruff of his neck, causing him to cough and choke, and later lift him to chest height by his collar, which was distressing to witness. After these acts, Cassidy threw Charlie to the ground.”

Charlie was examined by a veterinarian, who found that he was uninjured but suffering from an untreated skin condition. Cassidy admitted that he had been dealing with this skin issue for six weeks prior to the incident. Thanks to the care provided by the RSPCA, Charlie has since recovered well.

During the court hearing, Cassidy expressed remorse for his actions, stating that he was intoxicated at the time and was disgusted by his behavior. He apologized for his conduct and acknowledged the harm caused.

The court sentenced Cassidy to an 18-week prison term, suspended for 12 months. Additionally, he was ordered to complete a 12-month community order, which includes 10 days of specified activities. The total costs and charges amounted to £450. Furthermore, Cassidy was disqualified from owning or keeping animals for life, reflecting the severity of his misconduct and the importance of animal welfare laws in Kingston upon Hull.
