MATTHEW BELL SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE
A 32-year-old man named Matthew Bell has recently been handed down a prison sentence of nine years and two months after being found guilty of serious sexual offences committed against a minor.The incident dates back to 2012, when Bell, who was then residing in Daventry, Northamptonshire, was just 22 years old.
During that year, he established a connection with a then 14-year-old girl at a local youth centre.
Over a span of approximately two years, Bell engaged in numerous acts of sexual assault involving the young girl, often at various locations including his own home residence.
The victim, who endured the trauma for many years, choose to come forward with her account in 2020.
Her courage led authorities to open an investigation into her allegations.
Following this, Matthew Bell was arrested and faced charges related to his misconduct.
He was formally charged with two counts of sexual activity by penetration involving a girl aged between 14 and 15 years old.
The case was brought before Northampton Crown Court, where on October 15, 2022, a jury found Bell guilty of both counts.
Subsequently, his sentencing took place at the same court on November 28, 2022.
Detective Sergeant Cory Wise issued a statement emphasizing the significance of justice in this case.
He expressed relief that the victim’s long-standing suffering would now be acknowledged, stating, “The woman in this case has suffered with the memories of this abuse for many years and I am so pleased for her that she has seen justice done and Matthew Bell recognised for the sexual offender he is.” Sergeant Wise particularly highlighted the vulnerability of the victim, noting, “At only 14-years-old, this girl was unable to consent to a sexual relationship and it is important to make this point very clear.
Bell knew exactly how young she was and yet still pursued her, grooming and manipulating her.” He reaffirmed that Bell’s actions are inherently criminal and that such conduct cannot be justified under any circumstances.
He further added, “Bell will now spend a significant period of time in prison and I hope this case demonstrates what happens to adults who think it is acceptable to form ‘relationships’ with children.
It is a crime, it will always be a crime, and every single ounce of the blame lies with the offender.” The detective sergeant concluded with a note of hope for the victim and a reassurance that Northamptonshire Police take crimes of this nature very seriously.
“This woman can be proud that her bravery has seen justice done and I hope she can now move forward with her life following the conclusion of this case.
