SHEFFIELD MAN MARTYN CATER SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE AND UNKNOWINGLY FATHERING BABY
In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the Sheffield community, Martyn Cater, a resident of Sheffield, was convicted of heinous sexual offenses committed against a young girl over several years. The victim, whose identity remains protected, endured a prolonged period of abuse starting in the 1970s, beginning when she was just a girl.
During this time, Cater would manipulate and assault her, often coercing her into touching him and forcing her into performing sexual acts against her will.
The victim’s suffering was compounded by her lack of awareness about the full extent of the abuse.
She only became aware of her pregnancy in the 1980s, when medical professionals informed her that she was expecting a child.
At that point, she was a teenager, and the revelation left her overwhelmed and confused.
She had no recollection of engaging in sexual activity, which made the situation even more distressing.
It was only later, through careful investigation and DNA testing, that she confirmed her biological son was fathered by Martyn Cater.
During a court hearing at Sheffield Crown Court, prosecutor Gordon Stables detailed the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding the pregnancy.
The woman was told she was pregnant and faced the agonizing dilemma of identifying the father.
She later deduced that Cater, who was much older at the time, must have drugged her to facilitate the assault, as she had no memory of consenting or engaging in sexual activity.
The baby was subsequently placed for adoption, and it was only years later that she learned the truth about her abuser.
The victim described the emotional toll of her ordeal, revealing that she experienced profound grief and shame as she watched her newborn son be adopted.
She recounted feeling overwhelmed by stigma and guilt, which haunted her for years.
Her fears were nearly confirmed when her son reached out to her around 2010, and she noticed striking similarities between him and Cater.
A DNA test confirmed her worst suspicions, establishing that Cater was indeed the father.
Expressing her anguish, she explained, “I still don’t know how he did it, where or when.
I have spent years feeling guilty about having my baby adopted.
It took me a long time to come to terms with what I did.
I never gave Martyn consent to have sexual intercourse with me.
I have no memory of it happening.
I went to the doctors a virgin and came out pregnant.
I put weight on and didn’t know why.” She also emphasized her desire for closure, stating, “He must have known he was the father.
I know Martyn is an old man now but he wasn’t when he did this to me.
I want closure now for this, both for my son and me.” Martyn Cater, who resides on Lock Street in Sheffield, pleaded guilty to multiple charges including indecency with a child, indecent assault, and serious sexual abuse.
The court sentenced him to four years and eight months in prison, bringing some measure of justice for the victim and her family.
The case has left a lasting scar on the community, highlighting the devastating impact of long-term abuse and the importance of justice for survivors.
